Lunds universitet, MAX IV, Diffraction & Scattering

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

MAX IV is a Swedish national large-scale research laboratory hosted by Lund University. It provides scientists from Sweden as well as internationally, with state-of-the-art instrumentation for research in areas such as engineering, physics, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed it will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually, conducting ground-breaking experiments in materials and life sciences using the brilliant X-ray light.

Are you interested to work in an exciting scientific environment? Perhaps a summer work at MAX IV would be something for you?

Your team
You will be involved in the commissioning of a rheometer, a complex sample environment used to study the flow response of materials at the CoSAXS and ForMAX beamlines. A demonstration experiment is planned to look at the response of an example material to changes in humidity. You will be integral in helping to plan and make tests for this experiment.

The successful candidate will be offered:

  • Experience to work at large scale research facility.
  • A unique chance to engage with a development project alongside scientists from MAX IV and Chalmers University.

The work tasks of the Summer students include:

  • Active participation in the commissioning and calibration of the rheometer and humidity controller.
  • Viscometric and rheological investigation of dilute solutions of cellulose-based materials, food materials like yogurt, and graphene-oxide systems.
  • Active participation in looking into the effect of humidity on rheological and mechanical properties of food materials as well as wood-fiber based biocomposites.
  • Active participation in designing and performing rheological tests for material analysis of food materials like lipids/fats/yogurt and cellulose derivatives like nanocellulose.
  • Interpretation of results through data analysis at a basic or pre-intermediate level.

Qualifications

  • The successful candidates must have background in STEM subject.
  • Basic understanding of physics, chemistry and materials science.
  • An interest in soft condensed matter is considered as an advantage.
  • Basic experience of working in lab would be an asset but not mandatory

To be successful in this role you need to have the following qualifications

  • A passion to learn about food materials and their material behavior at different physicochemical conditions.
  • A basic background or passion to do hands-on experiments with rheometry and corresponding accessories.
  • Basic knowledge on fluids (dynamics) is considered as an asset but not necessary.
  • Good computer skills and good knowledge in English, both in speech and writing are essential.

As a person you have the ability to follow the rules and take initiative. You are performance oriented and structured.
