Lunds universitet, MAX IV, Safety

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

MAX IV is a Swedish national large-scale research laboratory hosted by Lund University. It provides scientists from Sweden as well as internationally, with state-of-the-art instrumentation for research in areas such as engineering, physics, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed it will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually, conducting ground-breaking experiments in materials and life sciences using the brilliant X-ray light.

Your team
Lead by the HSE Group manager, safety group consist of radiation safety, experimental safety and general safety team. We are a group of 20 personnel specializing in various safety aspects namely radiation safety, chemical safety (gases included), machine safety, fire safety, environmental safety and security. The team provides expertise and support for projects and operations in MAX IV by ensuring the compliance to Swedish safety standards and legal requirements, despite the challenging environment of a research facility that explores the unknown relentlessly.

Would you like to work at the brightest light source in the world?

The candidate will participate in Monte Carlo simulations of MAX IV accelerator and beamline components related with radiation safety. This includes implementing, running and processing the results from a full facility radiation models. These results will be used to design and verify the biological shielding requirements and improve the scientific performance of beamlines. We are developing in-house tools to provide a rapid detailed geometric description of the whole facility. We are looking for a person with strong scientific computational skills that can interface between the geometry and the physics, to provide numerical variance reduction, and propergation of functional probabilistic risks into the final risk assessments.

Your main work tasks will be

  • Radiation safety simulations for beamlines and the accelerator.
  • Design of radiation safety shielding components for beamlines and the accelerator.
  • Streamline the tooling to allow non-experts to carry out their own radiological studies.
  • Prepare radiological risk analysis reports for the government authorities.
  • Make use of high-level maths to provide methods to all the rapid convergence of Monte Carlo simulations .
  • Daily radiation safety operation of the facility.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate has a PhD degree in maths / physics or other subject of relevance for the position. In addition to this, the candidate should have the following qualifications:

  • Ability to provide computational code that can solve problems and integrate it into existing frameworks.
  • Strong maths background and ability to apply a broad range of mathematical techniques to problems.
  • Monte Carlo simulation experience, e.g. FLUKA, PHITS, Geant4, MCNP etc.
  • Ability to work in a team, good communication skills, and a good command of English is necessary.

Below are seen as merits

  • Strong knowledge of C++.
  • Particle transport physics knowledge.
  • Knowledge of programmed geometry Monte-Carlo systems e.g. Geant4, CombLayer.
  • Ability to provide mathematical support for our calculational development e.g. geometric algebra, Boolean algebra optimisation, field theory or transport theory.

As a person you are a strong communicator and a team player.

What we offer

When you join our MAX IV family, you step into a world of cutting edge science. We make the invisible, visible, by supporting scientists from all over the world, generating scientific results for the benefit of society. We offer you a multicultural work environment with great opportunities for personal development whilst respecting a healthy work-life balance.
