Researcher in early Paleozoic paleontology, carbonate geochemistry, sedimentology and stratigraphy

Subject description
Environmental and climatic conditions during the early Paleozoic period, when relatively advanced organisms entered the geological archive and underwent extensive evolution, are still poorly known in many respects. This researcher position is linked to the project "Early Paleozoic isotope geochemistry, climate and environment: disentangling local, regional and global signals". The aim of the project is to improve the state of knowledge of the deep-time environment, biology and ecology by combining traditional sedimentological and paleontological methods with state-of-the-art geochemical analyzes and approaches. The applicant is expected to conduct his / her own research and will be part of the informal group Paleobiology at the department.

Work duties

Detailed description of the work duties, such as:

  • Research on early Paleozoic marine environments and their biota, focusing on carbonate bedrock
  • Field work and sampling (both inside and outside Sweden)
  • Preparation of samples from sedimentary rocks (for petrographic, geochemical analyzes, etc.)
  • Qualitative and quantitative analysis of sedimentary rocks and fossils
  • Performing geochemical analyzes in special laboratories
  • Virtual morphological reconstructions
  • Supervision of graduate and doctoral students
  • Seek external research funding

Qualification requirements

Applicants must have:

  • A PhD or equivalent research qualification with background in research on early Paleozoic marine environments
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English
  • Documented knowledge and experience of systematic sampling and preparation of relevant sample materials
  • Documented knowledge and experience of qualitative and quantitative (carbonate) sedimentological and micropaleontological analysis
  • Documented knowledge and experience of geochemical analyzes (elements and isotopes) regarding relevant sample materials
  • In addition to a doctorate, the applicant must have a comprehensive list of subject-relevant (peer-reviewed) publications
  • Holding of research grants that cover most of the salary and expenses within the project

Assessment criteria and other qualifications

  • Good knowledge of environments and living conditions during early Paleozoic, as well as the stratigraphic framework for this time interval
  • Experience in and ability to handle GIS software
  • Previously obtained external research funding
  • Experience in supervision and teaching
  • Good perdagogic qualifications
  • Completed post doc at international university outside Sweden

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
