Lunds universitet, institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top 100 universities. The University has 40 000 students and more than 8 000 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

The Faculty of Science conducts research and education within Biology, Astronomy, Physics, Geosciences, Chemistry, Mathematics and Environmental Sciences. The Faculty is organized into nine departments, gathered in the northern campus area. The Faculty has approximately 1500 students, 330 PhD students and 700 employees.

Subject description

The position is for a researcher for two years to work within the EU financed project CROSSDRO (http://www.jpi-climate.eu/AXIS/Activities/crossdro), which aims at cross-sectoral analysis of drought impact on nature and society. The analysis focuses drought impacts on vegetation, and is carried out in collaboration with four international partners. At Lund University, the analysis of satellite data at two scales is focused: Europe, and chosen drainage basins.

Work duties

Research will be carried out in Remote Sensing according to the following: The researcher will work with analysis of time series of remotely sensed data (primarily MODIS, Landsat, and Sentinel-2) to study impacts of drought on European level and in higher detail for chosen drainage basins. Also data reflecting geographical conditions (topography, land cover) and weather variations (precipitation, temperature, evaporation) and societal relationships (infrastructure, land use) are included in order to develop explanatory models for drought sensitivity, drough impact and drought resilience. Changes in dynamic vegetation response (phenology, productivity) and effects on water resources and carbon balance are important components.

Qualification requirements

Applicants must have:

  • Basic university education in technical or natural science with a large component of geomatics (GIS, remote sensing, computer analysis)
  • PhD with specialization in remote sensing of vegetation
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.

Assessment criteria

Criteria for the selection of candidate is knowledge and experience in the following fields:

  • Optical remote sensing, preferably oriented towards time-series analysis
  • Climatology / hydrology / water resources
  • Plant science / ecology, preferably oriented towards productivity, e.g. phenology, carbon uptake etc.
  • Computer programming
  • Data analysis (statistics, numerical analysis, time series analysis etc.).

Other qualifications

  • Experience in international publication
  • Other documented communication skills
  • Experience in independent research work, e.g. as a post doctoral researcher, or project leadership

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
