Description of the workplace

The position is located in the division of Literary Studies, which belongs to the same unit at the Centre for Languages and Literature (SOL) as Film Studies, Dramaturgy and the School of Creative Writing. Literary Studies is one of the department's largest subjects with undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate education. Undergraduate education consists of a Bachelor's Programme in Literary Studies with a labor market focus, independent courses and the Master's programme Literature, Culture, Media. Courses in children's literature are also offered from undergraduate to graduate level. The faculty's research includes studies in ancient, modern and contemporary literature, comparative studies in collaboration with language subjects at SOL, and other universities nationally and internationally, as well as interdisciplinary collaborations with subjects in the humanities, social sciences and medicine.

Work duties and areas of responsibility

We are looking for a postdoc who will contribute to and develop an interdisciplinary research project that examines migration literature in Sweden and how professionals with a migrant background establish themselves in the contemporary cultural and academic field in Sweden (https://postmigrantfields8.wordpress.com).The project is a collaboration with Malmö University and brings together researchers in Ethnology, Literary Studies, Migration Studies and Media Studies. The research is carried out in dialogue with other researchers and doctoral students at the departments in Lund and Malmö. The working hours are flexible, but it is a requirement that you participate in the daily work in Lund. The working language is English and Swedish. 

You are expected to

  • develop your own research on the Arabic literary field in Sweden, and possibly other Nordic countries, preferably with a focus on, for example, published works, authors and publishers, national and international networks and target groups, translations and paths to establishment,
  • publish your research and participate in conferences,
  • contribute to the project's seminars, meetings, workshops and other activities,
  • contribute to and develop the research environment in Literary Studies and Migration Studies at SOL and Malmö University.

Teaching, supervision and other administrative duties comprise a maximum of 20 % of the position.

Qualifications

Required qualifications

  • A Ph.D. or an international degree deemed equivalent for the position. The position is a career development post and its purpose is to act as an initial step on a career path. This requirement must be fulfilled no later than two months after the application deadline and the applicant is responsible for supplementing his/her application within this time with documentation that proves the completion of the doctoral degree. Therefore, the candidate most likely to come into question is one who has completed a doctoral degree no more than three years prior to the last date for applications. If special grounds exist, the degree can have been completed earlier. Special grounds include leave of absence because of illness, parental leave, positions as elected representative in trade union organisations, military service or service/assignments relevant to the subject area. In such cases, certification concerning this is to be submitted in connection with the application.
  • Documented excellent ability to read literature written in Arabic.
  • Documented good skills in Swedish, Danish or Norwegian.
  • Documented good skills in English.
  • Documented experience of research in the field of Arabic literature or culture.

Assessment criteria

The grounds for assessment are a good ability to develop and conduct high-quality research, and teaching skills. The main criterion for a postdoctoral fellowship is research expertise. As documentation for the assessment of qualifications, applicants are to submit a project plan of the research they intend to carry out during their appointment. Only applicants whose research plan and previous work could strengthen the research team and the project as a whole will be considered for the position of postdoc.

Specific qualifications of additional merit in descending order of importance:

  • PhD in Literary Studies with a focus on Arabic literature or a degree deemed equivalent,
  • documented knowledge of the literary field in Sweden and/or other Nordic countries,
  • documented independence and good cooperation skills.

Conditions

The appointment is limited to two years and refers to full-time employment in accordance with the central collective agreement on fixed-term employment as a postdoctoral fellow between the Swedish Agency for Government Employers and OFR/S, Saco-S, 19 November 2021.

  • Theory and method.
  • Relation to the international research front including the most important international works in the field
  • Schedule and expected results.
  • The applicant’s qualifications and competence to conduct the project.
