Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

Your team
The Radiation Safety Team is one of three teams in the Safety Group. The team currently consists of eight permanently hired members who collectively manage all aspects of safety work with ionising radiation at the MAX IV Laboratory. One of the current team members focuses on radiation safety simulations for shielding design and risk analysis reports. In this position, you would be dedicated entirely to that area of work. While the primary focus of this position is work in line with the facility needs, there may be opportunities to engage in independent scientific activities as circumstances allow, for example, contributing to the FLUKA development.

Would you like to work at one of the brightest lightsources in the world?

MAX IV is looking for a Radiation Safety Researcher to contribute to Monte Carlo simulations of accelerator and beamline components related to radiation safety. This role involves not only developing detailed parameterised geometric models and running simulations for various operational scenarios, but also applying the simulation results to the design and verification of biological shielding components, preparing risk analysis reports for the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM), and contributing to the development of related software tools. We are seeking a candidate with strong scientific computing skills applicable to geometry handling, variance reduction, data analysis, and radiation physics.

Your main work tasks will be

  • Radiation safety simulations for beamlines and accelerators.
  • Design of radiation safety shielding components for beamlines and accelerators.
  • Preparation of radiological risk analysis reports.
  • Development of inhouse tools to improve simulation efficiency by enabling advanced geometric constructions and data analysis.

To be successful in this role you need to have the following qualifications

  • Ph.D. degree in mathematics, physics or other subject of relevance for the position
  • M.Sc. degree in mathematics, physics or other subject of relevance for the position
  • Ability to develop computational code that can solve problems and integrate it into existing frameworks
  • Experience with Monte Carlo simulations, such as FLUKA, PHITS, Geant4, MCNP, etc.
  • Good understanding of and thorough experience with object-oriented programming.
  • Ability to work in a team, good communication skills
  • Good command of English, both oral and written

Below are seen as merits

  • Strong knowledge of modern C++
  • Knowledge of the physics of radiation interaction with matter
  • Familiarity with programmed geometry Monte Carlo systems, e.g. Geant4, CombLayer
  • Ability to provide mathematical support for computational development, e.g. geometric algebra, Boolean algebra optinisation, particle transport applications
  • Experience in radiation shielding design
  • Understanding of variance reduction techniques
  • Familiarity with quantitative risk assessments

As a person you are conscientious, organised, responsible and goal oriented. You have excellent problem-solving skills, and you can work within set timeframes.

What we offer
When you join our MAX IV team, you step into a world of front edge science. We make the invisible visible by supporting scientist from all over the world, generating scientific results for the benefit of society. We offer you a multicultural work environment with great opportunities for personal development with respect for a healthy work-life balance.

Would you like to work in a challenging and supporting environment? Then join us and take the opportunity to make a real difference!
