Description of the workplace

The postdoc fellow position is provided by the Division of Combustion Physics. Renewable energy is presently one of the most important fields of our research.
Our division is located at the Department of Physics, and has around 60 employees including 7 professors, 17 associate/assistant Professors. We have well-established expertise/instruments in laser diagnostics, combustion, chemical kinetics, and work in different topics, e.g., alternative fuels, aerosol, environmental and biomedical applications. For more details see our homepage: https://www.combustionphysics.lu.se
Our division has a good atmosphere/tradition of collaboration. The metal combustion project will involve many expertise and effective collaboration is the guaranty of the success.

Subject description

Investigation of aluminum/steam combustion is the subject of research, which will be a teamwork involving close collaborations of the experiments, kinetic modelling, and computation fluid mechanics simulations. The new employee will have main task on the experimental part but also being involved in other parts as well.

Work duties

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning. The purpose of the position is to develop the independence as a researcher and to create the opportunity of further development.
This postdoctoral position will have the main task in design and perform experiments in the topic of aluminum/steam combustion, especially in developing advanced optical diagnostics. The metal fuel team has three seniors and two postdoc fellows working in team. Your main responsibility will be the experimental part and together achieve an in-depth understanding of the governing mechanisms.

Detailed description of the work duties, such as:

  • Design and operate combustion systems of single aluminum particle and a spray of aluminum particles burning in steam dominated environments.
  • Design and perform optical measurements in the combustion system for species concentration, temperature distribution, particle size and distribution characterization.
  • Perform experiments of laser diagnostic of aluminum droplet combustion and support the modelling work with valuable data.
  • Collaboration and supervision with postdocs and PhD students in the lab.
  • Work on applying for external research funding.
  • Writing research reports and papers for conference and scientific journal.

Qualification requirements

Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position. The certificate proving the qualification requirement is met, must be received before the employment decision is made. Priority will be given to candidates who have graduated no more than three years ago before the last day for application. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Education in thermal engineering, chemical engineering, or physics.

Assessment criteria

This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills.

Other qualifications:

  • Research experience/education in thermal physics and engineering.
  • Research experience in laser combustion diagnostics.
  • Research experience in spray and solid fuel combustion.
  • Research experience in metal fuels.
  • Personal qualities such as independence and ability to collaborate.

Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
