Job assignments

The position as a Ph. D. student mostly comprises graduate studies, but up to 20% of the total work load may contain other duties at the department, mostly teaching in lower level classes.

The Ph. D. programme in mathematics can contain pure as well as applied mathematics in various combinations. A list of possible research areas is included at the end of this document. The final choice of project and thesis advisor will be made jointly by the candidate and the department.

Eligibility

A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes if he or she:

1. has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or

2. has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second cycle, or

3. has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

A person meets the specific admission requirements if he or she has:

1. at least 90 credits of relevance to the subject area, of which at least 60 credits from the second cycle and a specialised project of at least 30 second-cycle credits in the field, or

2. a second-cycle degree in a relevant subject.

In practice this means that the student should have achieved a level of knowledge in mathematics that corresponds to that of Master of Science programmes in Engineering Mathematics or Engineering Physics or a Masters degree in mathematics or applied mathematics.

The student must also be judged to have the potential to go through the Ph.D. programme.

Basis of assessment

The assessment of the application will be made on the following criteria:

1. Depth of knowledge and previous coursework in mathematics and/or applied mathematics.

2. The ability to complete the Ph. D. programme.

3. Independence and quality in academic work:

  The ability to

    - plan and perform research,

    - express themselves both in spoken and written form,

    - learn new things and present the state of knowledge in the relevant subject matter,

    - discuss possible applications of new knowledge.

4. Ambition, perseverance and motivation to conclude graduate studies in mathematics.

The assessment will be based on provided documents, written application, and for a smaller select group of applicants, interviews and possibly an audition talk.

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.
