Subject description
Product development consists of methods and processes focused on value creation through the development of new and innovative technology-based products. The traditional technical aspects are involved such as engineering design techniques (synthesis and analysis), cost reduction, increase in product quality, matching company strategy and product policy, and offering the market the kinds of products that are justifiable from a sustainable development perspective. Modern product development also takes advantage of any new management methods, new software technologies or advanced manufacturing technologies, such as additive manufacturing, that can help us develop better products faster.

Work duties
The professor will primarily work with research and teaching at postgraduate level, as well as with strengthening and developing these areas by establishing a research group and by supervising of doctoral students. A prerequisite for this is position is the ability to obtain external research funding.

The professor will also participate in the development and implementation of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as in the strategic development of the subject area within the scope of the Faculty of Engineering LTH’s educational programs.

The professor will also take part in the management of the university’s additive manufacturing lab and spearhead research efforts in the area of design for additive manufacturing.

An important aspect of the role is to establish and develop contacts and partnerships within academia, industry and other organisations, both nationally and internationally.

Qualification requirements
Appointment as a professor requires that the applicant has:

  • Demonstrated research expertise.
  • Demonstrated teaching expertise.
  • Completed at least five weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning, or acquired equivalent knowledge by other means, unless there are valid reasons.

Additional requirements:

  • PhD degree in Engineering or corresponding competence
  • Documented experience and good skills in managing research groups.
  • A profound publication record in high-ranked journals related to product development.
  • Extensive knowledge of the entire subject area and in-depth knowledge in the areas of product innovation/product planning, product development and engineering design.
  • Strong, documented skills in applying for and obtaining external research funding.
  • Experience of development work in or with industry.
  • Very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written.
  • Proven ability to lead and develop an organisation.

Assessment criteria
For appointments to professor, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A very good national and international standing as a researcher. The requirement for international experience shall be assessed with consideration to the character and traditions of the subject.
  • A very high level of teaching skill, including a very good ability to conduct, develop and lead teaching and other educational activities on different levels and using a variety of teaching methods.
  • A good ability to supervise doctoral students to achieve a PhD.
  • A good ability to collaborate with wider society and communicate his or her activities.
  • A good general ability to lead and develop activities. 

Other qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the entire industrial product development process, from needs identification to launching a product on the market.
  • Knowledge of modern product development software, advanced manufacturing technologies, such as additive manufacturing, and the industries they serve.
  • Experience in developing collaboration between academia, industry and society, nationally and internationally.
  • Experience in supervising doctoral students.
  • Ability to motivate students to take responsibility for their own learning.
  • Ability to communicate, particularly with students and teachers from the Faculty of Engineering and other faculties.
  • Good relationship-building skills.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research, first and second cycle education and innovation within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
