Job description

A PhD-position is available in theoretical chemistry for computational investigations of molecular-based systems for solar energy conversion, with particular focus on Earth-abundant materials such as photo-functional iron-based complexes currently under development. Investigations of photophysical and photochemical properties of new molecular systems will be conducted using quantum chemical calculations. Key aspects of this project include accurate quantum chemical calculations of excited state properties, as well as advanced computational investigations of photoinduced charge transfer processes and excited state evolution. Developing fundamentally new insight into excited state properties of complex molecular materials with unconventional photophysical and photochemical properties using first principles quantum chemical methods will be a key part of the research. The computational investigations will be conducted in close collaboration with experimental groups in the Department of Chemistry at Lund University dedicated to developing and characterizing novel molecular systems for solar energy conversion and related photochemical applications. This project therefore provides extensive opportunities to collaborate with experimental colleagues for example in terms of joint analysis of experimental and computational results.

Qualifications

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD-student with a very strong background in chemistry, physics, material science or equivalent. A thorough understanding of molecular quantum mechanics and a good general understanding of molecular photochemistry is required for the position, and the position particularly requires excellent aptitude for research in theoretical and computational chemistry where a successful candidate must possess the excellent general analytical skills required to carry out advanced computational chemistry research projects. Good collaborative skills and a keen interest also in molecular photophysics and photochemistry including photoinduced dynamics phenomena is very important to function well in the collaborative and cross-disciplinary research environment involving both theoretical and experimental collaborators. Proficiency in written and spoken English is required.

The applicants should provide their CV, publication list (if appropriate), description of any research experience, motivation letter that justifies why they want to start PhD education at Lund University and how this particular research project matches their own interests and scientific background, and ideally one or two academic recommendation letters with the detailed contact information to the persons providing the references.

Eligibility
Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who:

- have completed a second-cycle degree

- have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from    second-cycle courses, or

- have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.
