Lunds universitet, Konstnärliga fakulteten, Teaterhögskolan i Malmö

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

The Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts is one of eight faculties within Lund University and includes Malmö Art Academy, Malmö Academy of Music and Malmö Theatre Academy, also Inter Arts Center and Choral Centre South. The Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts offers Bachelor and Master programs in visual art, music and drama, and various courses of different extent. The Faculty also runs third cycle (postgraduate) studies in artistic research and music education.

The artistic research highlights the combination of perspectives on artistic practice, artistic knowledge generation and artistic learning. The participation of doctoral students in the institution’s broad activities is an essential part of the development of the institution’s collective knowledge environment. In practice, this means that the doctoral student is to take part in the department’s meetings and actively contribute to knowledge development.

About the graduate school
Agenda 2030 is the framework for sustainable development that the world’s nations have signed to end extreme poverty, reduce inequalities, solve the climate crisis, promote peace and equity and much more. In order to achieve the goals, research has several important roles: to identify challenges and conflicting objectives, contribute new solutions, generate dialogue and learning between different societal stakeholders and critically analyse the goals. Lund University aspires to be a part of the solution and has therefore started a graduate school focusing on societal challenges, sustainability issues and Agenda 2030. We now welcome to the graduate school applicants from various disciplinary backgrounds who want to take an active role in Agenda 2030 research. The graduate school offers a unique opportunity to gain interdisciplinary perspectives on global challenges and contribute to current research while deepening your subject knowledge.

The graduate school will have at least 12 doctoral students from all faculties. You will be associated with a specific research studies programme, and simultaneously take part in the university-wide interdisciplinary research studies courses, developed on the basis of the issues defined by the global goals. The courses provide great potential to develop new forms of collaboration and work for change across disciplinary boundaries. Besides the research studies courses, you will participate in several activities linked to the graduate school in order to take an active part in the global sustainability agenda and to advance the research front on issues concerning Agenda 2030, for example through seminars, conferences, study trips and collaboration with various societal stakeholders.

Work duties
To conduct research studies leading to a doctoral degree in theatre within the framework of the position. In addition to the obligation to undertake their own research studies, the successful candidate will work to a limited extent with education, research, artistic research and administration, in accordance with Chapter 5 Section 2 of the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100). This work requires regular attendance.

All applicants must have a research project clearly connected to Agenda 2030. All project ideas are welcome, but the starting point should be Agenda 2030’s holistic approach rather than focusing on individual sustainability goals.

Qualification requirements
Only those who are admitted or have already been admitted to a third cycle studies programme may be employed under a doctoral studentship.

A person is qualified for third cycle studies in the fine and performing arts if they have

  • Completed  a Master’s degree,
  • Met the course requirements of at least 240 credits within a theatre degree or comparable study programme, of which at least 60 credits at Master’s level, or
  • Acquired essentially equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

The specific entry requirements for research studies in the fine and performing arts are met by those who

  • Have shown a plan and purpose for an intended project and had it assessed and approved by the admissions board,
  • Have conducted independent work of such kind as to enable the assessment of the applicant’s suitability for the programme,
  • Have artistic expertise in relation to the field of theatre or other relevant connections to artistic activity in the field, and
  • Are assessed as having the general ability to successfully complete the programme.

Grounds for assessment
Applicants are to present a plan for their research project together with their application. The plan is to include a project description and an outline for the implementation of the research work, as well as a description of how the project can contribute to innovative thinking and boundary-crossing research linked to Agenda 2030, in relation to the applicant’s artistic background.

The grounds for selection among applicants are their qualifications at the time of application. After an initial selection, interviews will be conducted with the most qualified applicants. Where necessary, the admissions board may request additional documentation.

The selection criteria are

  • The applicant’s suitability for artistic research work and their potential to benefit from the research studies programme,
  • The artistic quality and feasibility of the project within the set timeframe (i.e. over a period equivalent to four years of full-time study),
  • The quality of the research plan with regard to relevance, originality, research issues and methodology description, as well as its links and relevance to Agenda 2030, and
  • The department’s desired specialisations and availability of supervision.

The fact that an applicant has transferable credits from a previous study programme or professional activity does not give them any precedence over other applicants.

The doctoral student project should be based on an artistic practice that investigates how theatre can contribute to Agenda 2030’s holistic approach with regard to economic, social and environmental sustainability. Also of interest are artistic issues that connect and interact in various ways with other disciplines within the graduate school that are created within the framework of this vacancy announcement. The project should finally contribute to a broader understanding of knowledge generation based on the Agenda 2030 goals as above.
  • a documented CV and certified qualifications, and
