Lund University, Faculty of Science, Department of Physical Geograhy and Ecosystem Science

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

Mixed-phase clouds containing both ice and liquid are pivotal for the climate system, as they determine the net radiation entering it. Concentrations of ice influence the microphysical and radiative properties of these clouds, and hence may affect the climate and rates of climate change. Yet the initiation of ice inside clouds is uncertain.

The present project aims to represent lab observations of ice initiation in a climate model and to investigate the effects from time-dependence of activity of ice nucleus aerosols for the climate system.

The project is part of a larger collaboration between experimentalists and atmospheric modellers in Sweden, Norway and USA.

Jobassignment
The work will involve numerical modelling. The student will improve off-line simulation with cloud schemes from a global model for two observed cases of clouds. The representation of ice initiation will be improved with lab data.  Mechanisms for the effects on climate from the initiation of ice in clouds by dust and soot aerosols will be investigated. This will involve coding with FORTRAN 90 in a UNIX Environment.

Desirable skills and qualifications
This position is an introductory step in a research career.

Students with a background in numerical modelling and knowledge about physics and meteorology are encouraged to apply.

Requirements:

  • The applicant must have a bachelor's or master’s degree in physics, meteorology or an equivalent field.
  • Applicant should have experience of FORTRAN in UNIX environment.

It is desirable to have documented knowledge from their university education in

  1. Mathematics, especially differential equations
  1. Numerical methods and/or computer programming
  1. Physical meteorology (e.g. cloud physics).

In the application, applicants should provide evidence of how they meet these requirements.

Eligibility
Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who- have completed a second-cycle degree- have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or- have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.
