Post-doctoral position in in the development of education and applied research aimed at agricultural and food industry professionals in Europé

Subject description

Existing training for agricultural and food production is not adapted to future requirements for sustainable food systems. Challenges regarding the knowledge transfer of current research to professionals are well documented.

Within the framework of European cooperation in the field of research and education, applied research aiming at develop new frameworks for education and applied research shall be conducted. The research area is Science and Technology Studies (STS), where connections between science, technology and society are studied and analyzed, with special focus on the agrifood system.

Work duties

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral posistion is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position shall include the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning.

Detailed description of the work duties:

The work will mainly be conducted as part of the research project NextFood - educating the next generation of agri food professionals. The research project is carried out in close collaboration with the members of the consortium, which includes HEIs and organizations in both Europe and other parts of the world. The tasks therefore include actively collaborating with these international actors and independently driving both the acquisition of qualitative research data and the analysis and compilation of it. The tasks include conducting interviews and ethnographic fieldwork, studying professionals in the agrifood sector as well as persons active in academia and authorities.

The collected empirical data will in turn be the basis for the development of: a. Framework for future education in the agrifood sector b. Peer review system for assessing the social impact of applied research

Further work duties may include

  • Teaching in the first, second and third cycles of studies
  • Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students
  • Actively seeking external research funding
  • Collaboration with industry and wider society
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above

Qualification requirements

Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Documented experience of working with ethnographic methods, including interviews and participatory observation
  • Documented knowledge of theories on knowledge development and knowledge transfer, as well as relations between science, technology and society
  • Documented knowledge of the impact of cultural aspects on learning situations
  • Good ability to collaborate with both international research institutes and professionals in the agrifood area
  • Experience of working in inter disciplinary settings
  • High ability to independently run a research project
  • Experience of agriculture and/or food production

Assessment criteria and other qualifications

This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers.

Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research in the specific research area.
  • Teaching skills.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment This is a full time fixed-term employment of a maximum of 2 years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”) between Lund University, SACO-S, OFR/S and SEKO, dated 4 September 2008.
