Materials science

Subject description
The subject comprises experimental materials science, in particular synthesis and characterization of materials that can be nanostructured. Examples are superconducting or quantum materials, materials for neuromorphic computing, complex oxides, wide-bandgap semiconductors, or organic-inorganic hybrid materials.

Qualification requirements
Appointment as a professor requires that the applicant has:

  • Demonstrated research expertise.
  • Demonstrated teaching expertise.
  • Completed at least five weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning, or acquired equivalent knowledge by other means, unless there are valid reasons.
     

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Proven ability to lead and develop research activities, including attracting external funding.
  • A profile commensurate with a future leadership role within NanoLund and/or LINXS.
  • The application must include a description of a longterm vision for how the applicant will contribute new materials to NanoLund, and how these can be used for basic or applied science, in particular in synergy with NanoLund’s existing core competence in nanostructures based on group III-V materials.

Assessment criteria
When assessing the applicants, special importance will be given to research and teaching expertise within the subject, with a stronger emphasis on research excellence. 

For appointments to professor, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A very good national and international standing as a researcher. The requirement for international experience shall be assessed with consideration to the character and traditions of the subject.
  • A very high level of teaching skill, including a very good ability to conduct, develop and lead teaching and other educational activities on different levels and using a variety of teaching methods.
  • A good ability to supervise doctoral students to achieve a PhD.
  • A good ability to collaborate with wider society and communicate his or her activities.
  • A good general ability to lead and develop activities.
     

Other qualifications:

  • Potential for collaboration with existing NanoLund research groups.
  • Demonstrated experience and success in leading a research group with significant external funding from multiple sources.
  • Demonstrated experience and success in collaborating with multiple research groups.
  • Demonstrated experience and success in leading multi-group research and funding efforts.
  • Experience as a user of large-scale research facilities such as synchrotrons.
  • A research direction with opportunities to make use of MAX IV or ESS, directly or through collaborations.
  • A research direction with opportunities to make use of Lund Nano Lab, directly or through collaborations.
  • Experience of and interest in sharing facilities, resources and equipment with other groups.
  • Experience of collaboration with industry and/or other non-academic stakeholders.
  • Contributes to diversity within NanoLund and the Faculty for Engineering with respect to gender, international and cultural background, or experience from other academic institutions.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research, first and second cycle education and innovation within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
