Subject description
Postdoctoral position in electrical and information technology, with a focus on 5G Cellular Positioning for Vehicular Safety. Cellular communication signals have always been used for positioning. Cellular operators must satisfy stringent demands in terms of emergency call localization. However, the achievable accuracies were never sufficient for vehicular applications, such as navigation, let alone safety-critical applications. To enable safety-critical automotive applications, a high degree of accuracy and reliability is needed, as well as very low latency. Today, these demands can partially be satisfied by GNSS, though not in dense urban conditions. The core idea of this project is to utilize the new fifth generation mobile signals (more precisely, 5G in the millimeter wave band) to provide accurate 3D position and motion information, especially for challenging urban and suburban scenarios. The work performed in this project will lead to an understanding of the potential of 5G millimeter-wave radio as a complementary positioning and sensing technology for vehicular applications.

Work duties
The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning.

Detailed description of the work duties:

  • Research within the subject area, as described above. The work includes planning measurement campaigns and collecting data from custom transmitters and receivers at 28 GHz. The measurements will be performed primarily in urban scenarios and allow for analysis of V2I use-cases as well as V2V use-cases. Positioning-relevant channel models, verified by the real world measurements, will be developed. These models will account for the operating environment, beamforming, signal structure, bandwidth, array configuration etc. Our first assumption is to extend the geometry based COST 2100 model for vehicular communication for this purpose. Based on the insights from the measurements and models, suitable positioning algorithms will be developed for the case of a single base station or several base stations. We will initially focus on Bayesian methods that can quantify uncertainty.
  • Collaboration with industry; the project is a part of a larger joint project with Swedish industry and Chalmers University of Technology and hence includes project meetings and joint project work.
  • Teaching at a undergraduate and graduate level, and supervision of degree projects and doctoral students, might be included.
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above.

Qualification requirements
Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Experience from radio channel measurements and characterization.
  • Documented knowledge in radio channel modelling.
  • Knowledge in radio based positioning methods.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications
This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills.

Additional assessment criteria:

  • Experience from vehicular communication systems, such as 802.11p and C-V2X.
  • Knowledge in MATLAB and LabView.
  • Knowledge in wireless propagation and antenna design.
  • Practical experience from statistical signal processing methods.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment
This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of 2 years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”) between Lund University, SACO-S, OFR/S and SEKO, dated 4 September 2008.

Instructions on how to apply
Applications shall be written in English. Please draw up the application in accordance with LTH’s Academic qualifications portfolio – see link below. Upload the application as PDF-files in the recruitment system. Read more:
