Lund University, Faculty of Science, Department of Physics

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

At the division of Mathematical Physics, theoretical research is conducted in a number of main areas, such as nuclear structure theory, quantum dynamics, transport and information in nanosystems, and electron correlations and structure in materials. A common denominator is that the work in all areas is based on the theory of interacting many-particle systems. Researchers at the division also have strong collaborations with experimental colleagues at Lund Laser Center (LLC), NanoLund, and the two major research facilities MAX IV and ESS.

Type of employment
Limit of tenure, 6 years, according to chapter 4, section12a of the Higher Education Ordinance, with the opportunity to promotion to senior lecturer.

Job description
Employment as Associate Senior Lecture is a career development position, where the holder is to be given the opportunity to develop his or her independence as a researcher and educator.

The research area of the position is theory of condensed matter systems, focusing on physical phenomena in and out of equilibrium. In particular, investigations of electron-electron and electron-photon interactions and coupling of electrons to bosonic excitations such as phonons and magnons will be emphasized.

Electron correlations and interactions between electrons and photons, phonons and magnons form the basis for a broad spectrum of phenomena in and out of equilibrium in the physics of condensed matter and constitute an important and active field of research, both nationally and internationally. In particular, there is a traditionally strong activity with world-leading research in the field, at the division of Mathematical Physics, Department of Physics. Supporting, strengthening and further developing these activities and thereby ensuring both the continuity of research and the world-leading position is of great interest to the department. In particular, we see that a new employee will, in addition to strengthening existing activities, develop the research by contributing to and working with new theoretical tools and methods.

The tasks will mainly be to conduct and develop research within the specified research area. The employee is also expected to contribute to teaching at the department, by lecturing at and being responsible for one or more courses in basic and/or postgraduate education per year. In addition to these main tasks, the duties will consist of supervising bachelor and master thesis students as well as acting as assistant supervisor for doctoral students and support and collaboration partner for postdocs. The tasks will also consist of actively seeking external research funding, both independently and in collaboration with colleagues at the division and the department, as well as nationally and internationally.

The employment includes teaching, currently 10-30% of a full-time position, averaged over the entire period of employment. The content of the tasks, as well as the distribution and scope between research and teaching, may change.

Eligibility
A person who holds a PhD or has the corresponding research expertise shall be qualified for appointment as an associate senior lecturer. Priority should be given to candidates who have completed their degree or have obtained corresponding expertise no more than five years before the last date for applications. A person who has obtained a PhD or the equivalent expertise earlier may be eligible if there are special grounds. (see Chapter 4 Section 4 a HEO)

The applicant must have completed a PhD thesis in physics (or equivalent) with a focus on theoretical physics.

Very good written and oral knowledge of English is a requirement.

For academic staff at Lund University the general qualification requirements are to be suited to and having the general ability required to complete the duties of the post well.

Basis of Assessment
A good ability to develop and carry out high-quality research activities, and teaching skill. The main selection criteria for the position are scientific and pedagogic skills, with an emphasis on scientific skills.

- Documented experience of theoretical work within condensed matter system in and out of equilibrium, with methodological focus on many-particle-Greens functions, is a requirement.

- Pedagogical skills are also an important basis for assessment. Experience in planning, developing and implementing teaching at university level is particularly meritorious.

- Particularly meritorious is also the demonstrated ability to obtain research funding from external sources.

- The candidate must have experience of subject-relevant postdoctoral research and have demonstrated a clear broadening of his/her scientific competence after the doctoral studies.

- Great emphasis will be placed on an independent research plan that shows, among other things, how the applicant's research strengthens the research at the division/department and in what research environments the applicant can develop collaborations.

- Great emphasis is also put on personal qualities and documented good collaboration ability. Desirable traits are openness, curiosity, creativity, originality, independence, and the ability to collaborate with colleagues within the academy.

It is expected that any non-Swedish speaking appointee within a three-year period will master the Swedish language well enough to be able to teach and to communicate with the university administration in Swedish.
