Subject Description
Postdoctoral position in computational plasma assisted combustion for gas turbines and dual mode ramjet engines.

Job description
The postdoctoral candidate will carry out research in the field of computational combustion focusing on investigating the effects of non-thermal plasmas on gas turbine combustion and dual mode ramjet combustion. This activity is supported by two projects: EFFECT2 which is funded by the Swedish Energy Agency and focuses on gas turbine combustion, and STRATOFLY which is an EU H2020 project focusing on high-speed civilian transport. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to interact with other researchers in both projects and contribute to meetings, seminars and conference, and journal articles.

The main work duties involve:

  • Generate, modify and improve CAD models of various combustors and engines.
  • Create computational grids based on the CAD models.
  • Perform numerical simulations, preferably using reacting Large Eddy Simulation, based on these grids with primarily OpenFOAM.
  • Analyze the LES results and compare with experimental data.
  • Based on the postdoctoral fellow’s simulation investigations publish the results in well-established scientific journals within the subject area.

Qualification requirements
Appointment to a postdoctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

  • The subject of the doctorate degree should be in the disciplines of Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Physics (fluid dynamics, combustion or similar).
  • Good oral and excellent written proficiency in English.
  • Swedish citizenship is required for this position.

Assessment criteria 
This is a career development position primarily focused on research. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject and potential as researchers. For appointment to a postdoctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high-quality research.
  • Teaching skills.

Other qualifications:

  • Expertise in computational fluid dynamics and/or combustion.
  • Experience with computational fluid dynamics including mesh generation and visualization.
  • Capacity to publish in highly ranked scientific journals.
  • Ability to document and present the research results.
  • We are looking for a person, who is passionate for research, aim-driven, and can work independently.

The research is interdisciplinary, and a broad competence profile and experiences from relevant areas of fluid mechanics, combustion and computational fluid dynamics are of special value. Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the group, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment
This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of two years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a postdoctoral fellow”) between Lund University, SACO-S, OFR/S and SEKO, dated 4 September 2008.
