The Department of Statistics employs around 15 researchers, teachers, PhD students and other staff. We conduct research within a number of areas, such as the analysis of high dimensional data, Bayesian methods, spatial-temporal models, non-Gaussian modelling, applied research in the social sciences, and stochastic models and computational statistics. Lund University announces a limited-duration (four years) position as Associate Senior Lecturer in statistics with focus on data science. The position is full time, with placement at the Department of Statistics, School of Economics and Management. An Associate Senior Lecturer can apply for promotion to a permanent position of Senior Lecturer if he or she meets the promotion requirements (see below).

The successful applicant must have proven competence and experience in the field of statistics.

Job description

The position includes both teaching (40%) and research (60%). The department is in the process of establishing a research group within machine learning and high dimensional data. The applicant is expected to participate in this group's work. The applicant is also expected to produce scientific papers, actively participate in scientific conferences, build a research network, organise workshops and supervise PhD students. In recent years the department has developed several courses within data science, e.g., Bayesian methods, Data Mining and Visualization, Deep Learning and AI methods. The applicant is expected to teach these types of courses and to develop new courses in this field. Teaching can be at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels. Supervision of undergraduate essays is also expected.

Qualification requirements

To qualify for the position of Associate Senior Lecturer in statistics, applicants should have been awarded a PhD degree in statistics or mathematical statistics not more than five years before the application deadline. The position includes teaching in English and therefore requires a good command of the English language. The ability to develop and implement high-quality research and good and broad teaching skills are the basis for the assessment of the position. A good ability to interact with the surrounding society and to inform about research and development is also taken into account.

Assessment criteria

The School of Economics and Management strives for a balance between research and teaching in all positions. Equal weight will therefore be given to scientific and pedagogical accomplishment in the selection process.

In the overall evaluation of scientific skills, particular weight will be given to the applicant's publications (or papers accepted for publication) in journals with the international peer-review system. The quality of the journals and their relevance to the field of statistics will be taken into account. The overall evaluation of pedagogical qualifications includes teaching experience and pedagogical skills. The applicant's ability to obtain external research grants and to communicate with society-at-large will also be considered.

Research and teaching experience within data science are of special merit.

Applicants who do not speak Swedish are expected to be able to teach in Swedish within two years.

A PhD degree or experience of two years or more at the post-doctoral level from outside of the School of Economics and Management is a strong merit.

Terms

Lund University has an individual salary policy. Applicants are encouraged to propose a suitable salary in their application. 

The salary range is between SEK 460,000 – 520,000 per year depending on qualifications. The salary will be renegotiated and at a competitive level within the specialization if and when the candidate is promoted to senior lecturer.

Criteria for promotion

An Associate Senior Lecturer can apply for promotion to a permanent position as Senior Lecturer. Promotion will be granted if he or she is qualified for such an appointment and is judged to satisfy the eligibility criteria given below. An Associate Senior Lecturer can only apply for promotion once. The application should be submitted to Lund University School of Economics and Management no later than after three years and six months of employment.

To be promoted to a position of Senior Lecturer the applicant needs to show a strong progression in scholarly and pedagogical skills. In particular the applicant must have shown the following.

  • A high level of scholarly competence relevant to the subject and terms of employment of the position. This includes 4 publications accepted during the employment period in journals on the so-called Norwegian List.
  • A high level of pedagogical competence, where special weight will be given to a documented ability to teach and supervise at different levels and to development of the department's courses, together with an ability to reflect on one's own pedagogical development. Course evaluations are expected to be part of the documentation of pedagogical competence.
  • The completion of at least five weeks (7,5 hp) training in teaching within higher education.
  • An active interest in common departmental tasks.
  • The application for at least two externally funded projects.
  • A good ability to interact with the surrounding society and to inform about research and development.
  • Other personal abilities of importance to fulfil employment in a satisfactory manner.
