The research group

Alexander Pietras’ group is part of the Division of Translational Cancer Research, Department of Laboratory Medicine. Members of the lab use in vivo, ex vivo, and in vitro modeling to characterize phenotypic plasticity, regulation of brain tumor stemness, mechanisms of therapeutic resistance, and stem cell niche—tumor cell interactions in brain tumors.

We are hereby seeking a PhD student for work in various research projects within the research group. The employment is limited to 4 years full time with the desired date of admission on September 1, 2020 or by agreement.

Work duties and area of responsibility

The PhD project aims to characterize mechanisms of brain tumor resistance to conventional therapeutics and recurrence, with a specific focus on the regulation of tumor stemness by stromal cells of the perivascular and perinecrotic (hypoxic) tumor niches. The successful candidate is expected to develop and lead independent research projects as well as contribute to other ongoing activities in the lab. Tasks include data analysis, method development, project planning, and scientific writing. The position requires work with laboratory animals. Active participation in local, regional, national, and international scientific meetings and seminars is expected. The candidate is expected to contribute to shared duties at the Division of Translational Cancer Research and can be expected to perform some administrative tasks, as well as contribute to supervision of undergraduate students.

Qualifications

The following is meritorious for the position:

  • Masters degree in biomedical sciences, molecular biology, or related subject area.
  • Documented experience with laboratory animals, in particular mouse models of cancer, or documented training and experience in tumor biology and relevant methodologies, in particular those related to studies of the tumor microenvironment or response to therapy.

Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.


Eligibility
Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who- have completed a second-cycle degree- have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or- have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.
