Job description
The holder of this position will be expected to conduct 80% research and 20% teaching for a duration of 18 months. The postdoctoral position is part of “The military as an 'agent of change' for gender-relations in post-conflict societies? Evidence from Liberia and Mali” (Gendered Militaries), a three year research roject funded by the Swedish Research Council and SIDA (the Swedish International Development Agency), with Associate Professor Lisa Strömbom as Principal Investigator. The purpose of “Gendered Militaries” is to critically examine how the military institution could function as an ‘agent of change’ in terms of gender relations in a post-conflict society, focusing on gender in military reform in Liberia and Mali. It has a specific focus on the intertwined processes of gender integration and gender mainstreaming in the post-conflict phase. The postdoctoral fellow will utilize and contribute with refinement of the conceptual building blocks of the study and conduct fieldwork in Mali in order to investigate gendered aspects of military reform there in general and the role of the military in Mali’s society in specific. Eligibility
Eligibility for employment as a postdoctoral researcher is restricted to applicants with a PhD degree in a relevant subject. Aapplicants should have completed their PhD less than three years prior to the deadline for applying to the post. The three-year limit can be extended in cases of parental leave, sickness leave or similar circumstances occurring after the PhD defence. Applicants who have yet to complete their PhDs are welcome to apply but should demonstrate that they will receive their PhD degree no later than on the first day of employment as postdoc. The most important qualification for the position is a solid track record of research related to the women, peace and security agenda as well as experience from fieldwork in post-conflict countries. Research skills and academic promise will be the main selection criteria, but teaching skills will also be considered. Proficiency in spoken and written English and the ability to teach in English is a requirement. The candidate must have demonstrated excellent skills in academic written English. The ability to conduct research independently and the ability to participate in research collaboration with comparative elements are very important considerations.
