We are hiring a researcher in the research project on ‘African states and economic developmentin the 20th century: Capacity to count and collect’. The project is financed by the Swedish Research Council with a five year Development Research Grant and is based at the Department of Economic History at Lund University.

The project is led by Professor Morten Jerven. Thilo Albers and Marvin Suesse are co-investigators on this project.The main objectives of the research project are to complete a database on taxation and census taking in African states from c.1890–2015, and to use this data for the analysis of state formation, state capacity and state legitimacy in the 20th century.

Assigned duties

The researcher is expected to be able to work with statistical and historical analysis of existing and helping to create new databases and co-write articles, as well as conduct independent own analyses.

The researcher will also be able to conduct independent research in Economic History. She/he must be willing to interact with students at the Department of Economic History and to participate actively in the common activities of the Department. The position involves a limited amount of teaching and/or supervision of Bachelor and Master's Theses, maximum 20% of the employment.

Eligibility/Entry Requirements

To be qualified for employment as Researcher, the candidate must hold a PhD in Economic History or related discipline (e.g. Economics, Sociology, Economic Geography, Statistics, History). Applications will also be accepted from persons who have not yet completed their PhD, but this condition must be satisfied at the time of employment. 

Basis of Assessment

Scholarly proficiency is the main requirement for employment. The candidate must have demonstrated a high degree of research expertise as manifested in the quality of the PhD dissertation and/or publications. Knowledge of African economic history and the source situation in African countries in terms of taxation and census is a merit. The evaluation will take personal qualities, such as academic independence, willingness to collaborate,and communication skills, into consideration.
