Specific subject description

The position will contribute to the development of the existing research profile at the institute, be closely integrated with ongoing research and education, and contribute to advancing and developing research in the field of environmental economics for a transition to climate-neutral and resource-efficient economies. Of particular interest is research into the implications of policies and measures driving this transition, and how they affect various actors and the wider society. The research is expected to make an important contribution to how different actors, particularly companies, consumers and the national economy, react to incentives, and to the establishment of conditions for a transition to climate-neutral and resource-efficient economies.  The research will be interdisciplinary in nature and linked to IIIEE's four research themes.

Work duties

Employment as an associate senior lecturer is a career-development position and aims to develop the holder’s independence as a researcher and educator. The duties mainly involve research and teaching. As part of their research work, the associate senior lecturer is expected to initiate new, externally funded research. An opportunity for five weeks’ training in teaching and learning in higher education is to be offered in connection with the appointment.

The work duties involve:

  • Research in the subject area.
  • Teaching at first, second and third-cycle level.
  • Supervision of first and second cycle and doctoral students.
  • Secure external research funding.
  • Collaboration with business and society.
  • Communication and dissemination of research results.
  • Administrative duties linked to the work duties above.

The study programmes at the institute include on-site and on-line teaching, multidisciplinary assignments, applied tasks with societal actors, work in multilingual contexts and interaction with many different nationalities. The position is to contribute to the development of our study programmes within the above-mentioned context. 

Qualifications

Those qualified for appointment as an associate senior lecturer are those who have

  • completed a doctoral degree in environmental economics or
  • achieved equivalent research competence.

Preference will be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period.

Other requirements:

  • Strong proficiency in both spoken and written English.

Assessment criteria

When appointing an associate senior lecturer, the following are to serve as criteria for assessment:

  • Very strong ability to develop and carry out research in environmental economics.
  • Very strong teaching skills.

Other qualifications:

In the field of research ability:

  • Relevant experience as a postdoc in environmental economics and competence in areas relating to the research themes of the IIIEE
  • Proven ability to use quantitative methods in economic research and demonstrated experience of statistical tools and programmes to analyse data (e.g. SPSS, SAS, Stata)
  • Experience with publishing in recognised, high-impact scientific journals
  • Proven track record with successfully applying for and receiving external research grants
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary, inclusive and international research team
  • Ability to engage with industry and wider society
  • International work experience and international networks
  • Proven experience in organising outreach activities

In the field of teaching ability:

  • Experience with teaching on-site and remotely
  • Experience with leading and developing (under) graduate courses/modules
  • Experience with teaching and leading courses in an interdisciplinary environment.
  • Experience with supervision

Good collaborative skills, drive and independence will also be taken into account, as well as how the applicant’s experience and skills are deemed to complement and strengthen ongoing research, first and second-cycle education and innovation at the department and contribute to its future development. 

Terms
The appointment is limited to 4 years and is full-time. The appointment is limited to a fixed term in accordance with Chapter 4, Section 4a of the Higher Education Ordinance.

Promotion to senior lecturer in sustainable consumption for a transition to low-carbon and resource-efficient economies

The associate senior lecturer can apply during their period of employment to be promoted to a permanent position as senior lecturer. The assessment for this is made against the requirements below. If these are met and the person is deemed suitable, a promotion is to be awarded. Applications can only be made once.

Qualifications

Those qualified for appointment as a senior lecturer are those who have:

  • Been awarded a PhD or have the corresponding competence or some other professional expertise that is of value in view of the subject matter of the appointment and the duties that it will involve.
  • Teaching expertise.
  • Training in teaching and learning in higher education of at least five weeks or equivalent knowledge that has been acquired in another way.

Other requirements:

  • Strong proficiency in both spoken and written English.
  • Good collaborative capabilities, independence and drive.

Ability to actively, independently and successfully apply for external funding

Assessment criteria

During the assessment, particular weight will be accorded to research and teaching expertise.

When appointing a senior lecturer, the following are to serve as criteria for assessment:

  • Good national and international level as a researcher, where the requirement for international qualifications must be assessed with regard to the nature and tradition of the subject area.
  • Very strong teaching skills, meaning a good ability to conduct, develop and lead teaching and other teaching activities at different levels and with varying teaching methods.
  • Ability to initiate new research initiatives and to plan and start new research projects.
  • Ability to participate in the supervision of doctoral students undertaking PhD studies.
  • Ability to collaborate with wider society and provide information about their own research and that of the department.
  • Ability to lead and develop activities.
