Subject description

The position comprises research and development in the field of biomedical engineering with a focus on chip integrated nanofluidic single cell processing and analysis by mass spectrometry(MS)-based proteomics. Using a broad range of micro/nanofluidic techniques, including surface modification, femto-liter fluid control, droplet generation, femto-liter chromatography and reaction chemistry, a cutting-edge platform for performing single-cell protein analysis will be developed. Protein analysis will be performed by direct interfacing of the nanofluidic single cell platform to high end mass spectrometry. The research will also include protocol optimization of the single cell processing as well as technical modifications of the nanofluidic chip to mass spectrometer ion source.

Work duties

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral posistion is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position shall include the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning.

The research activities involve development of protocols for nanofluidic chip integrated single cell processing and interfacing to MS-proteomic analysis.

Detailed description of the work duties, such as:

  • Nanofluidic chip design, fabrication and operation
  • Protocol optimisation of nanofluidic single cell processing
  • Interfacing of nanofluidic chip to the mass spectrometer source
  • Mass spectrometer operation and proteomic data analysis
  • Collaboration with partners in Taiwan including guest research periods
  • Actively seeking external research funding
  • Interaction/collaboration with industry partners
  • Teaching at graduate and post graduate level
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above

Qualification requirements

Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the last date for application. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English
  • Very good knowledge of mass spectrometry

Assessment criteria and other qualifications

This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers.

Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • Good ability to develop and conduct high quality research
  • Pedagogic qualities
  • Experience of mass spectrometry-based proteomics
  • Experience of mass spectrometry instrumentation and technology
  • Experience of micro-/nanofluidics and lab-on-a-chip technology

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment
This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of 2 years with aims for extension. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”) between Lund University, SACO-S, OFR/S and SEKO, dated 4 September 2008.
