Service Studies

Service Studies is an interdisciplinary research field focusing on investigating and problematising services. At the Department of Service Management and Service Studies, we examine services from a sustainable, economic, cultural and social perspective, moving between public and private service production. Service Studies is a subject which not only interrogates the service society on the basis of intellectual premises, but also identifies and problematises concrete issues defined by the sectors and organisations we study and collaborate with. The research is organised into four broad themes: Consumption, marketing, and retail; Management, organization, and work; Sustainability, resources, and services; and Tourism, place, and mobility.

Management, organization, and work

The department conducts research in management, organization, and work from several perspectives. We now aim to further reinforce this profile. The research proposed in the application should have a clear connection to a service studies perspective on management, organization, and work, in particular with regard to public services (whether provided by public organizations, NGOs, or commercial organizations). This may entail a focus on issues such as service work and innovation, leadership, administration, governance, management, HRM, work conditions, automation/digitalization, and management control. The research proposed in the application should have a clear connection to a service studies perspective on management, organization, and work regard to the public sector, in particular welfare services. It is also possible to propose other research themes of relevance to service studies.

Duties

The PhD programme consists of 240 credits (equivalent to four years of full-time studies) and is concluded with the public defence of a doctoral thesis. The appointed doctoral student will receive a salary from the University during four years, and his or her main obligation is to complete their PhD studies, which primarily includes an independently written doctoral thesis. The position may involve departmental duties, mainly in the form of teaching, up to 20 per cent of fulltime working hours, in which case the appointment will be extended by the equivalent number of hours. The terms of employment for doctoral students are regulated in the Swedish Higher Education ordinance, Chapter 5, Sections 1-7.

The doctoral student is expected to be present and actively participate in the research environment at the department. The doctoral studentship will commence on 1 September 2021 or according to agreement. Eligibility

Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who

- have completed a second-cycle degree- have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or

- have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

To meet the specific entry requirements the applicant must have completed at least 30 second cycle credits in social sciences, for example in the main field of Service Management, Business Administration, Public Administration, or Sociology, or acquired equivalent knowledge. The applicant must also have completed a master's degree project of at least 15 credits.

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.

Assessment criteria

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance. The applicants will be ranked based on an overall assessment of the quality of their submitted degree projects and papers, research proposal, grades from previous studies, relevant work experience, and personal suitability. As third cycle studies in service Studies are very demanding, the applicant must be highly motivated and able to work independently under time constrains. Proficiency in both written and spoken English is also a requirement. As the PhD student is expected to do empirical work in a Swedish context, proficiency in writing and speaking a Scandinavian language is a merit. A limited number of applicants will be asked to provide a written work sample during the final stages of the admission process, after which a shortlisted number of applicants will be called to interview.

The limit of tenure is four years according to HF 5 kap 7§.

1. a cover letter in Swedish or English of max 1,000 words, which contains a brief presentation of yourself and your qualifications, as well as a brief explanation of why you are interested in the third cycle programme in Service Studies at Lund University,

3. a CV in Swedish or English that demonstrates your qualifications for the third cycle programme in Service Studies,

5. a Master´s thesis, i.e. a degree project in Swedish or English at second cycle level, corresponding to at least 15 credits at second cycle level in Service Studies or another discipline deemed equivalent,
