Lund University, Faculty of Social Sciences , The Department of Service Management and Service Studies

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

The professorship in question is primarily affiliated to the research theme Management, Organisation & Work. Campus Helsingborg also hosts the Centre for the Management of Public-sector Organisations (CLOO), where several of the department’s researchers are involved.

Duties and expectations

The principal duty of a professor of service studies is to collaborate with other teachers and researchers to lead and develop the department’s research and third-cycle studies, develop internal and external networks and drive the work of applying for research and project grants. A professor is expected to participate in and bear responsibility for management and development at departmental and faculty level. The professor is also expected to conduct research of a high international standard, to teach in all cycles, supervise doctoral students and be committed to collaboration with society at large. A high level of attendance at the department is required if the professor is to meet these expectations.

Given the department’s interdisciplinary nature, we welcome applicants from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds, including service studies, business administration, political science, sociology or other social sciences.

As teaching may be required in both Swedish and English, a successful non-Swedish-speaking candidate will be expected to subsequently acquire the requisite command of the Swedish language to perform routine teaching and administrative duties. Opportunities are available to take Swedish-language lessons at Lund University.

Qualifications

A person who has demonstrated both research and teaching expertise shall be qualified for employment as a professor (Swedish Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 1993:100) Chapter 4 Section 3). Applicants should be able to clearly document current, internationally outstanding academic qualifications, including research and the management of research projects, and teaching. Research expertise shall have been demonstrated through autonomous research that significantly exceeds the requirements for appointment as an associate professor.

The applicant shall have documented teaching experience at first, second and third cycle. Qualification for this appointment requires that the applicant has supervised at least one doctoral student to successfully defend their dissertation.

Unless special reasons exist, the applicant shall have undergone a minimum of five weeks of training in teaching and learning in higher education or have acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way. A successful applicant without formal training in teaching and learning in higher education will be expected to undergo such training within one year of taking up their appointment. The general qualifications to teach at Lund University are that the applicant is suitable for the position in question and otherwise has the ability to perform their duties well.

Assessment criteria

As much attention shall be given to the assessment of teaching expertise as to the assessment of research expertise. When assessing applications, particular emphasis will be placed on the following points.

It will provide a particularly useful qualification if the applicant has conducted highly qualified research, teaching and collaboration of relevance to the public sector.

Other useful qualifications include:

• documented good ability to publish in reputable international journals and/or be published by leading international publishing houses;

• demonstrated good ability to conduct research in collaboration and successfully write grant applications and obtain external funding for their research;
