The Research Group

The doctoral student position is placed in the research group Applied Gerontology, which is affiliated with the interdisciplinary Centre for Aging and Supportive Environments (CASE). CASE engages senior and junior researchers representing different disciplines and professions, such as gerontology, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, design science, nursing, public health, social work, psychology and epidemiology, at four of the university's faculties.

We are now looking for a PhD student for our project "Technologies supporting engagement in meaningful activities in and out of the home while ageing". Starting date for this full-time position is to be mutually agreed.

Description

The education at postgraduate level is intended to lead to a doctoral degree in medical science, specialization gerontology (medical / health science). The purpose of the doctoral project, "Technologies supporting engagement in meaningful activities in and out of the home while aging," is to increase knowledge about the needs and desires of older adults and generate innovative solutions to support active and healthy ageing through independence and participation.

The planned studies will be carried out within the framework of the three-year project "Transdisciplinary research to optimize healthy aging in and out of the home". The project is funded by the Kamprad Family Foundation, and is carried out in an interdisciplinary research environment that includes additional partners at the Faculty of Engineering and Jönköping University. Both quantitative and qualitative methods will be used for data collection and analysis. The supervisors represent medical psychology, occupational therapy and biomedical engineering.

Work duties

With the support of the supervisors, the doctoral student must

  • Plan the project, collect data, analyze and compile data and report the results in scientific articles in English.
  • Summarize the doctoral student project in conclusion in a framework in English and present in a doctoral dissertation.
  • Take the necessary courses at doctoral level, actively participate in seminars and other relevant activities and familiarize yourself with literature relevant to the research area.
  • Actively participate in communication and translation of research results to various target groups, both within and outside the research community.
  • Travel both domestically and internationally.
  • Participate in relevant activities and assignments within the research group, the department and CASE.
  • Other assisnments within the research group may also occur.

The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research studies which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses.

Admission requirements

A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes if he or she:

  • has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or
  • has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second cycle, or
  • has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad

A person meets the specific admission requirements for third-cycle studies in medical science if he or she has:

  • knowledge from basic higher education or equivalent and/or special professional experience.
  • sufficient knowledge is required in the subject area for postgraduate education.
  • at least 60 credits in medical science.

A student with a non-Nordic undergraduate degree must have knowledge corresponding to 3-year upper secondary school competence in English (passed test) if the home language is other than English.

Additional requirements:

  • Good computer skills
  • Good knowledge of spoken and written Swedish or other Scandinavian language
  • Good knowledge in English
  • Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities such as a high degree of independence, accuracy and ability to work in a team.

 In addition to the mandatatory requirements, the following ares will be considered as strong merits:

  • Interest and documented practical experience of work and / or research with aging people
  • Interest and documented practical experience of work and / or research with housing and technology

Assessment criteria

Selection for third-cycle studies is based on the student’s potential to benefit from such studies. The assessment of potential is made primarily on the basis of academic results from the first and second cycle. Special attention is paid to the following:

Knowledge and skills relevant to the thesis project and the subject of study. An assessment of ability to work independently and to formulate and tackle research problems. Written and oral communication skills Other experience relevant to the third-cycle studies, e.g. professional experience.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant, through his or her experience and skills, is deemed to have the abilities necessary for successfully completing the third cycle programme.

Type of employment
Limit of tenure, four years according to HF 5 kap 7§.

Terms of employment
Only those admitted to third cycle studies may be appointed to a doctoral studentship. Third cycle studies at the Faculty of Medicine consist of full-time studies for 4 years. Doctoral studentships are regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), chapter 5, 1-7 §§.
