About the subject
Classical Archaeology and Ancient History is the study of the Mediterranean cultures in the historical period of Antiquity. Emphasis is on the cultures of Greece and Rome, during the early historical and prehistorical periods, as well as the links between these cultures and those in Egypt, Western Asia and Europe north of the Alps. The subject is multidisciplinary in nature and offers various disciplinary and theoretical approaches. A basic tenet of the subject is that is covers the study of both materials and texts.
The research in Classical Archaeology and Ancient History currently being conducted at Lund University addresses several different areas but deals primarily with the history, religion, art, architecture and material culture of the Greco-Roman Mediterranean world, from the Archaic period to the early imperial period, as well as broader cultural and societal phenomena and processes.
We are now announcing a vacancy for a two-year position as a postdoc researcher in Classical Archaeology and Ancient History. With this appointment, we aim to develop the research environment at the division for Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, and to reinforce the subject’s research profile over the long term.
Duties
During the two-year period, the postdoc will be expected to conduct independent research that opens up contact interfaces with the other researchers at the division and provides opportunities for exchange of knowledge and collaboration. We are looking for intradisciplinary and interdisciplinary expertise and skills that complement and enrich the research and teaching environment at the department. In addition, the postdoc will work with strategic research applications that benefit both their own research profile and that of the subject. This work is mainly to be done at the department and to enable active scholarly exchange and collaboration.
Teaching, supervision and other administrative duties comprise a maximum of 20 % of the position.
Required qualifications
The candidate must have been awarded a Ph.D. or an international degree deemed equivalent not more than three years before the application deadline. If the degree was awarded earlier, the candidate must provide certificates of parental leave, illness or similar reasons for leave in the application. Excellent and documented English language skills are a requirement.
Assessment criteria
The grounds for assessment are a good ability to develop and conduct high-quality research, and teaching skills. The main criterion for a postdoctoral fellowship is research expertise. In all other respects, the assessment will be based on the requirements specified for the post. As documentation for the assessment of qualifications, applicants are to submit a project plan of the research they intend to carry out during their appointment. Only applicants whose research plan and previous work could strengthen the research team and the project as a whole will be considered for the position of postdoc.
