Duties

The professor is to work to strengthen and further develop the department’s research environment, internally, nationally and internationally. The duties include research, teaching and supervision in all cycles, research leadership, and responsibility for the department’s continued development in both research and education. The professor is to be an enthusing influence, initiating and leading their own and others’ research. Instigating and supporting work on external research applications is an important duty. The professor is to actively participate in the day-to-day work of the department. The position also includes administration connected with the duties above.

The applicant is expected to develop the subject’s research contact network, nationally and internationally, and develop contacts with wider society. The professor is to be an outward-facing figure for the subject within Lund University and towards the international research community.

Teaching will be conducted in Swedish and English. A successful candidate who is not already proficient in a Scandinavian language is expected to acquire proficiency in Swedish within the first two years of employment at the level required to carry out common duties in education and administration. There is an opportunity to receive language tuition at Lund University.

Qualifications

A person who has demonstrated both research and teaching expertise shall be qualified for employment as a professor, in accordance with chapter 4, section 3 of the Higher Education Ordinance. In the assessment of qualifications, teaching and research expertise receive equal consideration.

The applicant is to demonstrate their research expertise through documented international impact and research publication at the highest level within the field of sociology of law. The research output is to be of current interest, with a particular emphasis on research progression over the past five years. Research expertise is to have been demonstrated through independent research initiatives that to a significant extent exceed what is required for the qualifications of an associate professor.

Sociology of law is an interdisciplinary subject and the applicant is to be well-versed in both the theory of sociology of law and the methodology of the social sciences. The applicant is to demonstrate a documented ability to develop a research field and drive the research frontier forward. The applicant is to have documented expertise in obtaining external grants as a principal applicant, leading research teams and supervising doctoral students.
The applicant is to have documented expertise in collaborating with actors outside academia and in
actively working in and driving research collaborations and networks.

Teaching expertise is to be demonstrated through the ability to conduct, develop and lead teaching, as well as create engagement and interest in the subject area. The applicant is to have documented first, second and third cycle teaching experience and, in order to be qualified, must have supervised at least one doctoral student who was awarded a PhD.

The applicant is to have completed at least five weeks of training in teaching and learning in higher education or have equivalent knowledge that has been acquired in some other way, unless there are special reasons to the contrary. Applicants who have not studied teaching and learning in higher education are expected to take such a course within one year of taking up the position.
Teaching staff at Lund University must also comply with the general qualification requirements of being well-suited to the post and having the general ability required to complete the duties of the post well.

Assessment criteria

For appointments to professor, the following assessment criteria apply: a very good national and international standing as a researcher; a high level of teaching skill, which entails a good ability to conduct, develop and lead teaching and other educational activities at different levels and using a variety of teaching methods; a very good ability as principal applicant to obtain research grants in competition; a very good ability to supervise doctoral students, leading to a PhD; a good ability to engage with wider society and communicate information about activities, and a very good ability to lead and develop activities.

The applicant is expected to demonstrate expertise in the theory of sociology of law and the methodology of the social sciences, and demonstrate broad academic expertise. Research on sociology of law in a Nordic context is considered to be an additional qualification.

The applicant is to have a very good ability as a leader to develop, lead and carry out high-quality research. The applicant is to have demonstrated a good ability to collaborate and to have demonstrated general personal abilities that are significant for performing the duties well.

In the assessment of teaching expertise, experience of teaching sociology of law and other teaching activities in all cycles, as well as supervision and assessment, are taken into account. The applicant is to have good administrative skills and good abilities regarding communication, cooperation and leadership, as well as the other abilities required in order to satisfactorily carry out the duties of a professor. A good ability to cooperate and a willingness to work together in groups is highly valued.
