The Department of Clinical Sciences in Lund (IKVL) is one of six institutions at the Faculty of
Medicine, Lund University. The department has a broad collaboration, both within the faculty and within other units at the University. IKVL also has a well-developed collaboration with Skåne University Hospital (SUS) and Region Skåne as well as the surrounding community and business. This is topromote clinical and experimental translational research, development and education.

The research group
BioMS is a distributed national infrastructure in biological mass spectrometry, composed of three nodes located at Lund University, the Karolinska Institute and University of Gothenburg/Chalmers. Lund University is host university. BioMS primary task is to develop and implement new techniques in biological mass spectrometry and proteomics to support Swedish scientists in both academic and industry research programs. The node at Lund University is cross-disciplinary with several experienced scientists with broad knowledge in analytical chemistry, biology, medicine, biomedicine and bioinformatics. The node has several state-of-the art mass spectrometers and is integrated into an academic research environment with more than 60 scientists working on biological mass spectrometry related research questions.

The research group is now looking for a research engineer for a permanent employment with proposed start date 2022-01-01 (or by agreement).

Work tasks
The successful applicant will be responsible for maintaining and using state-of-the art mass spectrometry (MS) instruments and perform scientific projects together with BioMS users. The work assignment includes responsibility for contact with BioMS users, from first contact, rapidly understanding the scientific question, evaluating the project feasibility, planning and executing the required experiments to data analysis, reporting and helping the projects with interpretation and publication. The expert scientist is expected to drive innovation and build scientific excellence through internal scientific development and competitive awareness.

Other existing tasks within the research group may also be relevant.

Qualifications
Requirements:

  • Ph.D. or Masters in mass spectrometry, bio/analytical, biochemistry, microfluidics.
  • PhD with 5+ years OR Masters with 10+ years of experience in mass spectrometry, including working with diverse systems (including proteins, antibodies, and miniaturized technology).
  • Be capable of operating and maintaining state-of- the-art MS instruments.
  • Hands-on experience with at least two of the following techniques: peptide mapping, intact MS analysis, de novo sequencing, cross-linking MS, H/D exchange and label/label-free quantitative proteomics.
  • Strong communication skills in English and Swedish, both verbal and written.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities. You should be detail-oriented and be able to work independently under minimum supervision. You also handle operating at high pace and having agile decision-making, using evidence and applying judgement to balance pace, rigor and risk.

Highly desirable:

  • Knowledge and experience with academic project management.
  • Conversant in analytical method development & strategies.
  • Experience with, liquid handling systems, and robotic automation.
