Subject environment

The position is located at the Division of Musicology which is part of the Department of Arts and Cultural Sciences. The division conducts education in musicology in the first cycle up to a Bachelor’s degree, as well as research studies and research. Musicology deals with the history and theory of music from various perspectives. First cycle studies in musicology cover music as a sound phenomenon, music theory, musical analysis and music in society from historical and contemporary perspectives. Music production covers the analysis of production processes and history, as well as practical exercises in music production (recording, equipment knowledge, editing and mastering) among other things.

 

Duties

The main duties of the position are teaching and supervision in the first cycle, in both musicology and music production. Teaching duties also include management, planning, course direction and course administration as well as supervision in the first cycle. Supervision and teaching in the third cycle, as well as teaching in adjacent subjects at the Department of Arts and Cultural Sciences may also be required. In time, the holder of the position will be expected to be capable of functioning as head of division and is to contribute to the development of the subject. Research hours are to be dedicated to individual research and to applications for research funding. The duties also include monitoring societal developments of significance to the work at the University and the faculty. In addition, active participation in the department’s daily activities will be expected.

The successful candidate will be required to have the ability to teach in Swedish, Danish or Norwegian as well as English within two years of the start of employment.

 

Required qualifications

  • Completed doctoral degree or equivalent research expertise relevant to the subject area in question and the duties included in this post.

  • Demonstrated teaching expertise.

  • Completed training in teaching and learning in higher education amounting to at least five weeks or acquired equivalent competence by other means. 

Assessment criteria

  • the degree of research, teaching, administrative and other expertise that is of value in view of the work duties and subject matter of the post as well as other personal skills of relevance to perform the duties well.

  • a good national and international standing as a researcher,

  • good teaching ability, including a good ability to conduct, develop and lead teaching and other educational activities at different levels and using a variety of teaching methods,

  • an ability to participate in supervising doctoral students,

  • an ability to participate in and develop public engagement and other outreach activities,

  • an ability to otherwise lead and develop activities.

In the assessment, equal consideration is given to teaching expertise and research expertise.

 

Desirable qualifications for the position are the following, in decreasing order of importance:

  • a doctoral degree in musicology or another relevant research studies subject and documented research on issues of relevance to musicology,

  • documented expertise in music history, methods and theories of musicology, and documented practical and theoretical expertise in music production

  • documented experience of teaching musicology or teaching that has addressed issues of relevance to musicology,

  • documented expertise in one or several of the department’s other subjects and

  • documented experience of study administration and a good ability to collaborate in education and research.
