Type of employment

Tenure-track, 4 years, according to chapter 4, section 12a of the Higher Education Ordinance, with the opportunity for promotion to Senior Lecturer.

Work duties

We are looking for a sociologist or a sociologically oriented criminologist in the beginning of their career. The position is comprised of 50 percent research and 50 percent teaching. Work duties consist of teaching in sociology at undergraduate and postgraduate levels with focus on quantitative methods. Teaching can take place within both the sociology and the criminology program. Work duties also include conducting high-quality research in sociology, according to high international standards. The incumbent is expected to actively contribute to strengthening our research environments. This includes publishing and applying for external research grants. In addition, the incumbent shall actively participate in the development of the education offered.

Qualifications

A person who has obtained a PhD or an equivalent degree from abroad in sociology or criminology, or has acquired the equivalent research expertise in other ways, will be considered eligible for the position of associate senior lecturer. Only applicants who have obtained a PhD or acquired the equivalent qualifications no more than five years prior to the application deadline will be considered. Applicants who have obtained their PhD more than five years prior to the application deadline can be considered if there are special circumstances, such as sick leave, parental leave etc.

Requirements

The applicant is required to have a PhD in sociology or criminology (or equivalent research expertise), as well as having teaching and research experience in sociology or the equivalent. Priority is given to applicants with a high level of research and teaching expertise in quantitative methods. Experience of collaboration with external actors is also a merit. Applicants must also be able to present documentation of their research expertise. Ability to acquire external funding is a merit.

The applicant must be able to work independently with both teaching and research in a responsible and structured way. Good interpersonal skills are required.

Teaching will be conducted in Swedish and English. A documented ability to teach in English is a requirement.

Assessment criteria

In the assessment, special attention will be paid to the applicant’s development potential as well as documented research skills, ability to develop research within the subject area and to obtain external research funding. Research skills include international publication, independent research, and participation in international cooperation, with reference to the degree of progression following their PhD.

Great emphasis is also placed on pedagogical abilities, especially teaching in quantitative methods at various levels. In addition, attention will be paid to how the applicant’s research fits the department’s research environment.

Top ranked candidates will be invited to a trial lecture and an interview which will also form the basis of the assessment.

Promotion

An associate senior lecturer may, on application, be promoted to permanent employment as a senior lecturer. The application must be submitted to the Faculty of Social Sciences no later than 3 years and 6 months after the date of appointment. A review will be conducted midway through the appointment. The applicant’s eligibility and suitability for such employment will be assessed through a review of the progress they have made during their appointment with regard to research and teaching, focusing on the following criteria:
• well documented research competence that is of significance to the subject and duties of the post. This includes a good documented national and international standing as a researcher. Particular importance will be attached to the ability to publish internationally. Documented ability to write applications for external research funding.
• well documented teaching competence. Particular importance will be attached to documented skills in conducting teaching and supervision at different levels and to development of quality and breadth of teaching competence over time. Teacher training to the extent required for appointment as senior lecturer. The pedagogical competence must be documented in a teaching portfolio.
• progress in academic leadership through an enhanced ability to develop, lead and implement education and research and/or demonstrated leadership/commitment to duties for the department as a whole.
• good ability to interact with society and inform others about research and development work.
• When assessed, equal weight will be placed on pedagogical and research skills.
• where applicable, sufficient proficiency in Swedish to be able to teach in Swedish. There are opportunities for Swedish language training at Lund University.
