The Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts is one of eight faculties within Lund University and includes Malmö Art Academy, Malmö Academy of Music and Malmö Theatre Academy, also Inter Arts Center and Choral Centre South. The Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts offers Bachelor and Master programs in visual art, music and drama, and various courses of different extent. The Faculty also runs third cycle (postgraduate) studies in artistic research and music education.
The doctoral programme in Visual Arts or a degree of Doctor in Fine Arts is based on artistic knowledge and artistic work. This knowledge and work serve as the tools and perspectives for exploring the research issue selected by the student. The doctoral work will focus on thinking through the visual. The dissertation will also contain a reflective component
Admission is for four years of full-time study leading to a doctoral degree in Fine Arts. Research students are admitted in compliance with Lund University’s admission rules for third cycle studies.
The main task for doctoral students is to dedicate themselves to their third cycle studies, which entails running their own research project and attending research studies courses. The language of both tuition and the doctoral thesis is English.
A person meets the general entry requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes if he or she:
1) has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, 2) has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or 3) has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or
The higher education institution may permit an exemption from the general entry requirements for an individual applicant, if there are special grounds. Ordinance (2010:1064).
The specific entry requirements for admission to third cycle studies in fine art are met by candidates who: 1) has been awarded a degree of at least 240 credits in visual arts or has equivalent experience of artistic work, and 2) has produced artistic or curatorial work of an independent nature sufficient for assessment of the candidate’s suitability for the programme, and 3) has a good ability to both understand and write texts in English.
The application is to be written in English. A portfolio and a research plan presenting the applicant’s research project is to be attached to the application. The plan is to contain a project description, method description and a sketch of the implementation of the research project, including a schedule (3-4 pages). Only those admitted to third cycle studies may be appointed to a doctoral studentship. Third cycle studies consist of full-time studies for 4 years. A doctoral studentship is a fixed-term employment of a maximum of 5 years (including 20% departmental duties). Doctoral studentships are regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), chapter 5, 1-7 §§.
