LU, MedFak, Dep. of Translational Medicine

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

Description of the workplace
The group of Systems Virology is located at the Department of Translational Medicine and is led by Associate Professor Joakim Esbjörnsson. The group uses various bioinformatics and phylogenetics methods to combine genetic, clinical and epidemiological data to explain how viruses evolve and adapt to new environments – both at the population level and within individuals.

Here you can read more about our exciting research: www.virology.lu.se.

Within the research group, we safeguard a good work environment with respect and consideration in our relationships with each other. We strive for a workplace that is perceived as developing and stimulating for all employees, and we constantly work to create good conditions for job satisfaction, development, and participation for all employees. We care about both physical safety and the psychosocial work environment.

We offer
Lund University is a government agency, which means that you receive special benefits, generous holidays, a flexitime agreement and a favorable occupational pension.

Duties and responsibilities
The tasks include analysis of the gene that encodes the envelope of HIV-1 and HIV-2, respectively. Since these sequences have been generated from longitudinally collected samples, virus evolution is analyzed by so-called Bayesian phylogeny and phylodynamics (state-of-the-art). This is done after in-depth analysis of the presence of different recombinant variants of HIV-1 (which must be sorted out before phylogenetic analysis because they violate the evolutionary assumptions made when selecting a suitable substitution model). As the two virus types change at different evolutionary rates, advanced comparative analyzes will need to be developed, which include different types of model selection procedures such as path-sampling and steeping-stone sampling.

Phylogenetic and bioinformatic analysis of data is compiled in reports and finally by writing manuscripts that are submitted to scientific journals for review and publication. During the employment period, active participation in group meetings and project presentations is also expected (this also includes own presentations).

Qualifications
The employment requires:

  •  A PhD degree.
  •  Relevant experience in evolutionary biology (mainly virus evolution and selection processes), molecular biology (mainly PCR-based techniques), and phylogenetic sequence analysis (management and analysis of the sequence data collected from longitudinal sample series).
  •  Good knowledge of English, speech and writing, is a prerequisite for work in an international research environment.
  •  Great emphasis will be given to personal qualities. The tasks require that you are independent, cooperative, and driven.

Additional qualifications for the position are:

  •  Knowledge of virus-host interactions and how these relate to disease development.

Other
The employment is a general fixed-term employment (ALVA) with a scope of 100% for 12 months with a desired entry date of 1 July in 2022 or by agreement.

How to apply
The position is applied for via the university's recruitment system. The application must contain a personal letter with justification as to why you are interested in the employment and in what way the employment matches your qualifications. The application must also contain a CV, diploma or equivalent and other things that you wish to invoke (copies of grades, information for references, letters of recommendation, etc).
