Description of the workplace 

The Food hygiene and Food and bioprocess research groups at the Department of Food Technology, Engineering and Nutrition represent all aspects of food production and food safety. These research groups have several interdisciplinary collaborations in both academia and industry and perform basic research, as well as also applied research for commercial purposes.

Work duties 

The employment includes participation in research projects with the aim to turn plant-based residues into valuable ingredients and products for the food market.

The primary work duties are to provide support and practical assistance to a research team in the analysis of materials derived from agricultural residues. The tasks include analysis of nutrient composition (dry matter, protein, fat, ash, fibre analysis) and functional properties (gelling, water and fat retention, emulsifying ability, rheology analysis using RVA as well as DSC) on different plant materials e.g., okara from soybean, oat and fava bean, rapeseed protein concentrate and hemp protein concentrate. Microbiological analyses of plant-based material such as traditional cultivation methods and identification will also be performed. The duties also include laboratory assistance in teaching and collaboration with industrial partners.

Qualifications  

Required qualifications for the position are:

  • A degree in Engineering with specialisation in Food Technology, alternatively a master´s degree in Biotechnology, a master´s degree in Food Technology and Nutrition, or corresponding merits.
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Good knowledge and practical experience of basic food analyses.
  • Knowledge and practical experience of basic microbiological methods, such as cultivation and isolation of bacteria.
  • Experience of fermentation processes.

Additional qualifications for the position are:

Good oral and written proficiency in Swedish. Pedagogical experience. Experience of working with plant-based residues. Good knowledge in scientific writing. Experience of PCR-based methods for identification such as Sanger sequencing. Driving licence category B.

We will place great emphasis on personal suitability. Consideration will be given to drive, independence and good collaborative and communication skills, both within the project group and towards external partners. Great emphasis will also be placed on how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen the scientific work and the research group in which the applicant will work within.

Further information 

The position is a fixed term position for 9 months at 100 percent of full time and starting by agreement.
