Lund University hereby announces a vacancy for a full-time Senior Lecturer in Yiddish, based at the Centre for Languages and Literature.
Lund University is the only university in Scandinavia offering teaching and conducting research in Yiddish. The subject promotes revitalisation of the minority language Yiddish and constitutes an interdisciplinary research and educational environment. The Yiddish main field of study at SOL includes education in the language, literature, film and culture of the subject at both first and second-cycle level.Yiddish is one of a number of subjects in our international Literature-Culture-Media Master’s programme, and specialised courses on Yiddish modernism and Yiddish film are offered here We will also be starting continuing professional development for Yiddish teachers in autumn 2022 In terms of research, the department has developed a strong profile in memorial studies.
The teaching of Yiddish as a first language at schools must be expanded in order to strengthen the position of Yiddish in Sweden. As part of this, the Centre for Languages and Literature will be offering a study programme for teachers of Yiddish from autumn 2022. This continuing professional development for teachers of 4 courses of 15 credits each (60 credits in total).All courses are at 50% pace, and the languages of instruction are English and Yiddish. These courses emphasise knowledge of language and literature and introduce basic didactic methodology for teachers of Yiddish as both a first and second language.
To strengthen our research environment and further develop our range of Yiddish courses offered at both first and second-cycle levels, we are looking for an accomplished researcher and teacher with a genuine interest in working in one of the stated areas as part of our initiative to revitalise the minority language Yiddish. The duties of the position include research (at least 20%), teaching (no more than 70%) and supervision at both Bachelor’s and Master’s level as part of our courses and programmes. The research component of the position will include work on applications for external research funding. We attach great importance to the new senior lecturer’s cooperation and organisational skills.

An ability to teach through the medium of English from the first day of employment is required. The employee is also expected to have acquired sufficient skills in the Swedish language to teach through the medium of Swedish after two years of employment.
