Lund University hereby announces a vacancy for a full-time Associate Senior Lecturer in Yiddish, based at the Centre for Languages and Literature.

Lund University is the only university in Scandinavia offering teaching and conducting research in Yiddish. The subject promotes revitalisation of the minority language Yiddish and constitutes an interdisciplinary research and educational environment. The Yiddish main field of study at SOL includes education in the language, literature, film and culture of the subject at both first and second-cycle level. Yiddish is one of a number of subjects in our international Literature-Culture-Media Master’s programme, and specialised courses on Yiddish modernism and Yiddish film are offered here We will also be starting continuing professional development for Yiddish teachers in autumn 2022 In terms of research, the department has developed a strong profile in memorial studies.

The teaching of Yiddish as a first language at schools must be expanded in order to strengthen the position of Yiddish in Sweden. As part of this, the Centre for Languages and Literature will be offering a study programme for teachers of Yiddish from autumn 2022. This continuing professional development for teachers of 4 courses of 15 credits each (60 credits in total). All courses are at 50% pace, and the languages of instruction are English and Yiddish. These courses emphasise knowledge of language and literature and introduce basic didactic methodology for teachers of Yiddish as both a first and second language.

Duties

To strengthen our research environment and further develop our range of Yiddish courses offered at both first and second-cycle levels, we are looking for an accomplished researcher and teacher with a genuine interest in working in one of the above areas as part of our initiative to revitalise the minority language Yiddish. The work as an associate senior lecturer includes research (at least 50%) and teaching (no more than 50%). The position focuses on acquisition of research skills and experience, and a mentor will be available to support the associate senior lecturer. The position of associate senior lecturer in Yiddish is being created to strengthen research that enhances the conditions for revitalisation of the minority language Yiddish. The associate senior lecturer in Yiddish will thus contribute to and develop research in Yiddish on the basis of this overall purpose. Educational development work and teaching are expected to take place primarily within the framework of the Bachelor’s programme in Yiddish and continuing professional development for teachers in Yiddish.

Associate senior lecturer is a position that shall provide opportunities for teaching and research qualifications. The position shall first and foremost provide scope for developing research qualifications. The scope of the position shall also provide an opportunity for training in teaching and learning in higher education corresponding to at least five weeks.

Required qualifications

A person qualified for appointment as an associate senior lecturer is a person who has been awarded a PhD or has the corresponding research expertise. Primary consideration should be given to a person who has been awarded a PhD or achieved the equivalent expertise within five years of the deadline for application for employment as an associate senior lecturer. However, a person who has been awarded a PhD or achieved the equivalent expertise at an earlier date may also be considered if there are exceptional circumstances. Exceptional circumstances are sick leave, parental leave or other similar circumstances.

Further requirements for appointment are:

An ability to teach through the medium of English from the first day of employment is required. The employee is also expected to have acquired sufficient skills in the Swedish language to teach through the medium of Swedish after two years of employment.

Assessment criteria

  • a good ability to develop and carry out high-quality research or artistic research, and
  • teaching skill

The assessment will also focus on the applicant’s ability to achieve sufficient qualifications for promotion to senior lecturer within the time frame of the associate senior lecturer position.

Equal attention will be given to the applicants’ teaching and research expertise.

Desirable qualifications in descending order of importance:

  • having been awarded a doctoral degree relevant to the subject of Yiddish
  • an outstanding doctoral thesis
  • a proven interest in conducting research relevant to the subject of Yiddish in cultural, literary or linguistic studies
  • experience of interdisciplinary working in both research and education
  • experience of applying for research grants, either independently or with others
  • good cooperation skills

The Academic Appointments Board normally selects a shortlist of applicants. This selection can be done in one or several steps and if needed with the help of external experts. Conditions

Fixed term appointment, four years, according to Chapter 4, Section 12 b The Higher Education Ordinance with possibility for promotion to senior lecturer. The University applies individual salary-setting.

Promotion

An associate senior lecturer can apply during their period of employment to be promoted to an indefinite-term position as senior lecturer if she or he is qualified for such a position and is also considered suitable when assessed in line with the qualification requirements and assessment criteria below. Applications can only be made once and should be submitted to the Joint Faculties of Humanities and Theology six months before the position ends at the latest.

For appointment as a senior lecturer, the individual must have:

  • been awarded a PhD or have the corresponding research expertise or some other professional expertise that is of value in view of the subject matter of the post and the duties that it will involve,
  • demonstrated teaching expertise, and
  • completed at least five weeks of training in teaching and learning in higher education or acquired equivalent knowledge by other means.

General assessment criteria:

The degree of research, teaching, administrative and other expertise that is of value in view of the work duties and subject matter of the post as well as other personal skills of relevance to perform the duties well.

For employment as senior lecturer the following is specifically required:

  • a good national and international standing as a researcher,
  • good teaching ability, including a good ability to conduct, develop and lead teaching and other educational activities at different levels and using a variety of teaching methods,
  • an ability to participate in supervising doctoral students to achieve a PhD,
  • an ability to cooperate with wider society and to communicate his or her activities as well as otherwise leading and developing activities.

Additional requirements for promotion

For promotion, the applicant must be qualified to the extent that they meet the requirements for appointment as an associate professor in accordance with the guidelines of the Joint Faculties of Humanities and Theology and they must also have applied for and been awarded external research funding in competition.
