Lund University, LTH,

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

The position is based in the Division of Communications Engineering at the Department of Electrical and Information Technology. The division consists of 8 senior researchers (postdoctoral fellows and faculty members) and approximately 20 PhD students, and it has a long tradition of tight collaboration with industry. Within the division, we work with wireless communications in a broader sense and the activities range from communication theory to the implementation of antenna structures.

The service is funded by the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP). WASP is Sweden's largest ever single research program and a significant national initiative for strategically motivated basic research, training and recruitment of researchers. The program includes research on artificial intelligence and autonomous systems that interact with humans and adapt to the surrounding environment using sensors, information and knowledge to build intelligent systems of systems.

WASP's vision is outstanding research and competence in artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and software that is useful for Swedish industry. Read more: wasp-sweden.org

Subject
Communications Engineering with Focus On Optimization and Autonomous Wireless Systems

Subject description
Wireless systems are usually a prerequisite for cooperative autonomous systems. The best performance is obtained by joint, sometimes distributed, optimization of one or more simultaneous cost functions. Part of the subject area specifically concerns wireless autonomous systems where consideration is given both to the characteristics of the wireless link and to the autonomous process to be controlled. The second part concerns optimization of the autonomous wireless system itself. The complexity of today's wireless systems is high, and development is therefore moving towards greater elements of autonomy and self-configuration even in the network itself. Future wireless systems are expected to be more adaptive to the application area, but also to the environment they are in and able to learn what it looks like. The subject area therefore spans the sub-areas of optimization, machine learning, distributed synchronization, control of wireless networks, and control via wireless networks.

Work duties
Work duties include:

  • Research within the subject area.
  • Teaching in the first, second and third cycles of studies.
  • Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students.
  • Actively seeking external research funding.
  • Collaboration with industry and wider society.
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above.
  • Contribution to Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP)'s broader goals in research, education, and external collaboration.

Qualification requirements
Appointment to senior lecturer requires that the applicant has:

  • A PhD or corresponding research competence or professional expertise considered important with regard to the subject matter of the post and the work duties it will involve.
  • Demonstrated teaching expertise.
  • Completed five weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning, or acquired equivalent knowledge by other means, unless there are valid reasons.

Assessment criteria
When assessing the applicants, special importance will be given to research and teaching expertise within the subject, with research expertise being of greater importance.

The assessment criteria specify the aspects to be taken into account, and the level to be achieved, in order for the assessment criteria to be deemed fulfilled. The following assessment criteria must be fulfilled for appointment to senior lecturer:

  • A good national and international standing as a researcher. The requirement for international experience shall be assessed with consideration to the character and traditions of the subject.
  • Good teaching ability, including a good ability to conduct, develop and lead teaching and other educational activities on different levels and using a variety of teaching methods.
  • An ability to supervise doctoral students to achieve a PhD.
  • An ability to collaborate with wider society and communicate his or her activities.
  • A good general ability to lead and develop activities.

Additional requirements

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Background in several of the sub-areas of optimization, machine learning, distributed synchronization, control of wireless networks, and control via wireless networks.
  • At least two years’ experience of postdoctoral research in a research environment other than the university at which the applicant obtained their PhD.

Other qualifications

  • Proven experience of collaboration with wider society.
  • Proven experience of teaching and supervision of doctoral students and graduate students.
  • Experience in administration.

Consideration will also be given to ability to cooperate, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research, education and innovation within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
