Description of workplace

The Lund University Diabetes Centre (LUDC; www.ludc.lu.se) opens a position for a computer system engineer. LUDC is one of the largest diabetes research centres in the world with approximately 300 investigators and staff members working towards improved diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diabetes. The centre combines expertise in genetics, epidemiology, statistics, bioinformatics, molecular and cellular biology, physiology and clinical diabetes, and endocrinology to achieve these goals. LUDC has large unique biobanks and databases with genome-wide data linked to national registries providing information on disease etiology, progression as well as outcome and treatment. The centre has in-house platforms for most molecular genetic methods and metabolomics. Omics-information combined with extensive phenotyping allows a systems medicine approach to dissect the complexity of diabetes. A central theme at LUDC is to develop precision medicine to improve health and the quality of life of patients with diabetes.

Duties and areas of responsibility

The successful applicant will be part of the Bioinformatics Unit at LUDC, which includes several bioinformaticians, a biostatistician, a data manager, and another computer system engineer (https://www.ludc.lu.se/resources/ludc-bioinformatics-unit). The Unit provides bioinformatics, biostatistics, and computational support to anyone affiliated with LUDC, as well as access to a high-performance computing environment.

A successful computer system engineer candidate will primarily, together with our current computer system engineer, help run our Linux-based server and HPC environment for LUDC. In addition to this management and daily activities, the candidate will be involved in various projects and is expected to be able to provide support to the research groups at LUDC as and when needed. Work tasks may include:

• Processing/conversion of data.
• Simplified scripts or programmes.
• Design, implementation, and running of entire studies, both national and international.
• Handling of big data, often sensitive.
• Purchasing of hardware.
• Solutions for sharing data/resources with external collaborators.

These tasks demand dedicated work, focus, and a will to obtain new knowledge as it can involve complex solutions, often with deadlines and quality requirements. Large emphasis will be given to personal qualities such as collaboration skills and initiative-taking, thorough work methods and flexibility.

Qualifications:

• A bachelor's degree in a relevant area for the position and suitable work experience.
• Very good experience from installation, configuration, and running of Linux-based OS, primarily RHEL and clones thereof, such as Rocky, Alma, and Centos.
• Knowledge of building and installing software both as packages and via compilation.
• Experience of following, reading, and remedying problems based on information from logs and systems messages.
• Good understanding of the safe handling of data over digital platforms. Knowledge of the demands relating to personal data, biological/medical data, and what GDPR means for sensitive personal information.
• Good knowledge and experience of documenting your work, both on a technical and pedagogic level, in Swedish and English.
• Very good experience of working mainly in bash, but a plus if you have knowledge of working in other common script languages.
• Good experience of deployment, running, administrating, and updating servers at hardware level. (Firmware updates and out-of-band configuration such as iDRAC).
• Knowledge of Linux file systems in general, POSIX ACLs, rights and safety.
• Experience of working with network configurations of TCP/IP and firewalls (iptables, firewalld).
• Previous experience of configuring, setting up, and running environment with virtual machines in KVM.
• Documented oral and written proficiency in English.

Applicants are invited to apply for a full time (100%) permanent position as computer system engineer at LUDC. The position starts with a 6-month probation period. The preliminary starting date is 1 April 2023 or as otherwise agreed.
