Description of the workplace

The Regenerative Neurophysiology research group at the Department of Experimental Medical Science within the Faculty of Medicine is currently conducting research within neurology with a focus on reprogramming techniques to generate new neurons in the mouse brain and in vitro. The group was established in 2019 by Dr Daniella Ottosson and currently consists of 6 researchers. The group works closely with two strategic infrastructures within the Medical Faculty, namely MultiPark and Lund Stem Cell Centre. Our lab is located at the Biomedical Centre in Lund. We are now looking for a driven biomedical researcher with experience in cell culture to support the project as a doctoral student.

 Work duties and areas of responsibility

We are looking for a driven doctoral student to work on an exciting research project to study the functionality, integration and potential therapeutic effect of in vitro reprogrammed interneurons transplanted in an in vivo system. This project is part of a larger project and therefore will involve a lot of collaboration with other researchers within and outside the lab group. Your duties mainly include 2D, 3D and organotypic cell culture of human and mouse cells, histological and molecular analyses combined with electrophysiological measurements to study the functional and molecular characteristics of the reprogrammed interneurons. In addition, the PhD student is expected to carry out data analyses using statistical methods, data presentation and other tasks in collaboration with researchers in the group. Moreover, the PhD student is expected to take part in laboratory activities such as lab meetings to present data, journal clubs and university seminars and workshops as well as international conferences and possible business trips and stays abroad if needed.

Qualifications

Requirements for employment are:

-Master’s in Biomedicine, Neurobiology, Molecular/Cell Biology, or a related subject

-At least a year of documented hands-on experience in 2D, 3D and organotypic cell culture of human and mouse cells, histological and molecular techniques.

-Knowledge of neuroscience and practical experience working in a neuroscience laboratory. -You have good analytical skills

-You have good teamwork skills 

-You can communicate in English (oral and written), and presentation and writing skills

- The tasks require you to be reasonably independent and drive the research project
 
Additional qualifications for the position are:

-Experience in computer programs such as word, excel, photoshop and GraphPad Prism

-We appreciate some knowledge about animal models and electrophysiology

Further information

Employment is a full-time, fixed-term position of 4 years, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 5 Section 7. The desired start date is 01-05-2023 or as agreed.

Eligibility

Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who- have completed a second-cycle degree- have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or- have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.
