The Department of Architecture and the Built Environment is recruiting a university lecturer in Urban Design and Urbanism with an established track record of research and professional experience in urban design for sustainable development and collaboration on urban issues. Familiarity with sector-wide and transdisciplinary research work is crucial to the subject group's development. Applicants should have the ability to successfully attract external funding in the coming years. A background in architecture, planning or urban design is a prerequisite for participation in the practice-based teaching within the subject of urban design.

Urban Design and Urbanism, with a focus on sustainable urban design.

Subject description
The subject Urban Design and Urbanism urban planning and the design of the public space to achieve sustainable development goals. Research within the subject mainly concerns studies of urban space and its potentialities. Furthermore, issues of social segregation, blue-green solutions in open urban spaces, support for sustainable everyday activities, and how spatial design and materiality affect human interactions are studied. Urban design and urbanism include both scientifically and artistically oriented approaches. The breadth of the subject provides opportunities for qualitative and quantitative investigations and a diversity of artistic and scientific methods and modes of expression. The focus on sustainable urban design is about the design of cities, urban places and environments in relation to sustainability aspects - social, ecological and economic. This includes spatial design at multiple scales, in relation to a wide range of architecturally relevant aspects. The concept of liveable environments is central to the subject and is discussed in terms of spatial inclusion/exclusion, sustainability and democracy, equality and diversity, accessibility to housing and public spaces, the form and morphology of the city, urban/rural interfaces and lifestyle, and space and culture. Research and teaching also deal with topics such as urban transformations, sustainable urban landscapes, climate adaptation, social structures and digitization as well as biological diversity, circular processes and creative reuse. The subject's dominant focus on sustainable urban development provides multiple opportunities for research-oriented development in the coming years.

Work duties
Work duties include:

• Research within the subject area.
• Teaching in the first, second and third cycles of study.
• Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students.
• Active pursuit of external research funding.
• Collaboration with industry and wider society.
• Course planning in consultation with colleagues.
• Management tasks, e.g. director of Master’s education may be relevant
• Administration related to the work duties listed above.

Qualification requirements 
Appointment to senior lecturer requires that the applicant has:

• A PhD or corresponding research competence or professional expertise considered important with regard to the subject matter of the post and the work duties it will involve.
• Demonstrated teaching expertise.
• Completed five weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning, or acquired equivalent knowledge by other means, unless there are valid reasons. 

Assessment criteria
When assessing the applicants, special importance will be given to research and teaching expertise within the subject, where research expertise is of greater importance .

The assessment criteria specify the aspects to be taken into account, and the level to be achieved, in order for the assessment criteria to be deemed fulfilled. The following assessment criteria must be fulfilled for appointment to senior lecturer:

• A good national and international standing as a researcher. The requirement for international experience shall be assessed with consideration to the character and traditions of the subject.
• Good teaching ability, including a good ability to conduct, develop and lead teaching and other educational activities on different levels and using a variety of teaching methods.
• An ability to supervise doctoral students to achieve a PhD.
• An ability to collaborate with wider society and communicate his or her activities.
• A good general ability to lead and develop activities.

Additional requirements

• Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
• Completed degree in architecture or landscape architecture.
• Qualified, documented experience of work with sustainable development and urban design after graduation.

Other qualifications

• Experience in applying for research funding.
• Experience in teaching at the second cycle of study

Consideration will also be given to ability to cooperate, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research, education and innovation within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Description of the workplace
At the Department of Architecture and the Built Environment, teaching and research are conducted in subject areas with relevance to architecture and the built environment. The department is responsible for/ and participates in over one hundred courses at the undergraduate and graduate level. Subject-wise, the department's research spans a very broad field, including architecture, form and design; architecture and culture; housing and housing development; environmental psychology as well as urban design and urbanism. The Department of Architecture and Built Environment has a turnover of approx. SEK 100 million/year and employs approx. 70 people – teachers, researchers, technical/administrative staff and PhD students, as well as short-term staff. The technical/administrative staff of seven employees comprise the department's joint office. The department conducts teaching in several programs, mainly architecture, sustainable urban design, and industrial design, with a total of just over 500 students.

The subject Urban Design and Urbanism is taught within the Master's program SUDes (Sustainable Urban Design), which was founded in 2007 and today is an internationally renowned educational programme in sustainable urban planning. At the center of the education is the relationship between urban design and sustainable urban development. The students work at different scales, from detail plans to regional visions, and teaching is conducted in the form of design projects with support from theoretical courses, lectures and seminars.
