The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

Work duties

The position is part of the Knut Alice Wallenberg project “Entanglement and decoherence in ultrafast electron spectroscopy and microscopy” https://kaw.wallenberg.org/en/research/shedding-new-light-quantum-phenomenon which is built on a collaboration bewteen experimental and theoretical divisions at at the Department of Physics.

The aim of the work is to investigate the ionization of small quantum systems using a pair of attosecond pulses and advanced spectrososcopy technology (electron and ion spectrometers). The experiment is analoguous to the Young’s-slit experiment, where each attosecond pulse acts as a temporal slit. A prime focus of the work is to develop a theoretical understanding of Young’s slit experiment in quantum mechanics, and in particular to address the role of coherence and entanglement in the interpretation of experimental observations.

The work consist in quantifying the theoretical degree of coherence that can be achieved experimentally by including the temporal properties of the light, and utlimately the role of electronic and nuclear dynamics that may occur. Addtionally, experimental factors, such the experimental resolution or the detection of particle in coincidence, can be taken into account to identify limits or to develop new strategies for performing thought experiments.

 Qualifications

  • Education: awarded a second-cycle qualification in Physics
  • Work experience in research groups in quantum physics both in theory and experiment.
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Willingness to participate in teamwork for extended experimental periods.

Other merits

  • Programming experience in at least one of the three languages (Python, Matlab, C/C++).
  • Experience in teaching.

We will place great emphasis on personal suitability. Consideration will also be given to, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen the administrative work within the division of Synchrotron Radiation Research as well as contribute to its future development.
