Lund University, Department of Translational Medicine

Description of the workplace
The Diagnostic Radiology research group performs research related to clinical imaging diagnostics. LUCI (Lund University breast Cancer Imaging) is an interdisciplinary group of scientists that conducts research mainly focused on innovative clinical imaging methods in breast cancer diagnostics, with a particular focus on cancer screening and artificial intelligence. Diagnostic Radiology and LUCI are both headed by professor Sophia Zackrisson and consist of both scientists and technical staff. More information can be found here.

We care about creating a positive, respectful, and stimulating environment. We value communication and collaboration and a workplace that promotes learning and development for all employees. We are also committed to building a safe and positive environment for all employees through mutual respect and tolerance.

Our research group has pioneered breast mechanical imaging (MI), a method for measuring the distribution of stress (reactive pressure) on the compressed breast surface during mammography – breast x-ray imaging. For a new modality such as MI, it is vital that the method is comprehensively tested through both computer simulations and clinical trials. However, the tools needed to do the latter have not yet been developed. Together with collaborators from the Department of Biomedical Engineering, this project is aimed at doing precisely that.

We offer
Lund University is a governmental authority, which means you get special benefits, generous holidays and a favorable occupational pension. We also have a flexible time agreement that creates good conditions for a balance between work and leisure.

Work duties
The PhD student’s duties will be to combine state-of-the-art realistic computer simulations with exploration of unique clinical data. The PhD-student will develop, validate and use a new generation of multi-modality digital deformable breast phantoms to aid in the characterization of MI together with mammographic breast imaging.

The student will work in a multi-disciplinary team and will engage with international collaborators. Participation in international conferences and other meetings are expected and encouraged, as well as regular participation in regular groups meetings and seminars. Other duties such as supervision of master students and teaching may also be required.
