Lund University, Faculty of Science, Department of Biology

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

The Microscopy for biosciences (M-Bio), https://www.biology.lu.se/research/services-lab-tech-and-analysis/microscopy-platform) is an infrastructure platform at the Faculty of Science, Lund University, specialized in 2D and 3D analysis of biological samples. The platform has the capacity to analyze structural length scales from nm to cm. It brings together equipment and expertise in confocal microscopy (CLSM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray based micro computed tomography (micro CT) , infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopy and imaging. M-Bio serves as a joint infrastructure and meeting place for these microscopy techniques, primarily in biological and environmental science research at Lund University but is also used by other academic institutions and organizations. Moreover, M-Bio serves as an entry-level environment for MAX IV, and the AFM-IR equipment to be installed at MAX IV will be part of the M-Bio platform.

Work duties

The research engineer will play a key role at M-Bio being responsible for all IR and Raman equipment in cooperation with the platform management and other personal linked to the platform. The work duties include maintenance of equipment, project planning, contact with users and administration. The research engineer is also expected to take an active part in research projects.

The laboratory tasks include:

  • Operation and maintenance of all IR and Raman equipment, currently including one FTIR vacuum spectrometer, two FTIR microscopes, one optical photothermal IR microscope, and one dispersive Raman microscope.
  • User’s support including training, data acquisition and analysis. Some teaching duties may also be expected, for example involvement in PhD courses.
  • Maintaining a state-of-the-art knowledge of IR and Raman techniques and of the current literature to adapt and/or develop new methods and experiment designs (including methods for data analysis).

Qualifications

The successful candidate shall have the following qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in chemistry, experimental physics, or an equivalent subject area relevant to the position.
  • A documented understanding of theories and concepts relevant to spectroscopic methods.
  • Extensive practical experience in spectroscopic measurements.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Fluent in English, both written and oral.

We will put great emphasis on personal qualities. Especially important is the ability to handle and support users from different educational backgrounds and level of experiences as well as organizational skills.

Other merits

  • Experience of advanced IR and Raman spectroscopic and imaging techniques.
  • Experience in advanced spectroscopic and image analysis methods including multivariate methods.
  • Experience in molecular modeling methods, both electronic structure and molecular dynamics methods.
  • Ability to manage laboratory operations in a safe and effective manner and to maintain a clean and orderly laboratory environment.
