Description of the workplace

The research group in biorefinery is involved in developing processes and products from bio-based materials. The group comprises senior researchers, postdoctoral fellows, doctoral students, and research engineers. In recruitment, we strive to maintain a composition in the group that promotes all aspects of diversity. The group and the department as a whole provide an international environment with researchers from various European and non-European countries. As a postdoctoral researcher in the group, you will work on scaling up several different processes for the production of bio-based products, primarily HMF. You will also work on scaling up and evaluating various separation processes, primarily membrane-based. Supervision of doctoral students in the subject area and teaching at both basic and advanced levels are included to a limited extent.

Subject description

The projects underlying this position aim to develop and scale up a process for the production of HMF from biomass. The project is carried out in collaboration with researchers from the Department of Biotechnology and several companies. The project is funded by the Swedish Energy Agency. The process to be scaled up is based on oxidation and extraction, and an important part of the work is to intensify the process and achieve high yields and solvent recovery. The part of the project related to membrane filtration is related to drinking water production and scaling up processes, as well as verifying data from previous laboratory-scale experiments.

Work duties

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning. The purpose of the position is to develop the independence as a researcher and to create the opportunity of further development.

Detailed description of the work duties, such as:

Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Doctorate in chemical engineering or equivalent.
  • Documented experience in biomass conversion.
  • Documented experience in research in membrane technology.
  • Documented experience in the analysis of biomass components with HPLC or equivalent.
  • Good ability to work independently
  • Good collaborative skills

Assessment criteria

This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills.

Other qualifications:

  • Experience in seeking and obtaining research funding.
  • Driver's license type B as you will be conducting part of the development work at the premises of other companies during work hours.
