Description of the workplace
At the Psychiatry research group, research is conducted on psychiatric diseases with a main focus on self-injurious behavior and suicidality. The research is conducted across faculties disciplines: as well as in close connection with Region Skåne's unit for National Care (NHV) for intractable self-harm. Our research explores, among other things, how cognitive, psychological and care-related factors are related to self-injurious behavior. We also examine effects of interventions and treatments for various psychiatric symptoms as well as health economic aspects of these. Our group also conducts studies with a focus on relatives of people with psychiatric symptoms as well as a long-term epidemiological follow-up in a population cohort. The group is led by Associate Professor Sofie Westling and is located at the Clinical Research Center in Malmö.

Project description
This doctoral project is conducted within the projects “Help-seeking for self-harm behavior. What role do attitudes, personality, and exposure to self-harm behavior play?” and “Identification with a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder within Swedish adult psychiatry: A mixed-methods study. The current project aims to generate knowledge that can form the basis of new ways of helping people withself-harming behaviour. Data collection will be through rating scales for university students and interviews and rating scales with patients and psychiatric staff.

Work duties and responsibilities
The main tasks for a doctoral student are to engage in their doctoral education, and therefore you will be both admitted as a student and an employee at Lund University. Specifically, to the current project is that you will interview patients and psychiatric staff and analyze the data from the interviews using a qualitative method. In addition to this, you will perform statistical calculations on already collected data as well as compile the results and write articles as well as present findings at national and international meetings.

Eligibility
Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who:

  • have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.
  • good ability to assimilate PhD studies. 

Requirements for the position are:

  • master's degree in psychology.
  • good knowledge regarding self-injurious behavior among university students.
  • good knowledge regarding identity disorder and borderline personality syndrome.
  • very good knowledge of spoken and written English.
  • experience of work in adult psychiatry
  •  you must be self-motivated, initiative-taking and driven. Additionally, you need to have good collaboration skills, be structured, independent, creative, and have very good language, analytical, and mathematical skills. 

Meriting (not mandatory):

  • previous work within research projects regarding self-injurious behavior among university students.
  • documented experience in writing scientific articles.

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. In making the appointment, emphasis shall primarily be placed on the degree of ability to assimilate the doctoral education. Besides the obligation to engage in their own doctoral education, the holder may be required to perform duties related to education, research, and administrative work in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.

Type of employment
Limit of tenure, four years according to HF 5 kap 7§.

Terms of employment 
Only those admitted to third cycle studies may be appointed to a doctoral studentship. Doctoral studentships are regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), chapter 5, 1-7 §§. Start date 2024-09-01 or by agreement.
